Obituary Overview
IN LOVING MEMORY
BUCKINGHAM, Ronald Peter In
the twilight of a long and full life, Ron Buckingham passed on December 15,
2017, at the age of 98. Until they are
once more together, Ron will be lovingly remembered by his true love, his bride
of 72 years, Joyce Alicia (Nichols) Buckingham.
He will forever remain in the hearts of his three chosen children Peter
(Brenda), Judy and Richard; his grandchildren Candace (Ryan) Keast, Kimberley
Buckingham, Dave (Naoko) Isaacs, Krystle Isaacs and Donavin Buckingham; and his great-grandchildren
Jacob, Lucas and Caleb Keast, Kendrick and Kimoya Buckingham, and Alexis
Isaacs. Ron was born in London,
England, on May 31, 1919, and was the last surviving child of 18 born to Ernest
and Amelia Buckingham. After meeting
Joyce on the sunny shores of Guernsey Island in 1939 and his service to Britain
during World War II in the Royal Engineers, he and Joyce married April 25, 1945. They immigrated to Canada in 1948, first to
Haileybury and several years later to St. Catharines. Ron was a talented finish carpenter and, with
Joyce at his side, built their home. During
his career as Construction Superintendent for Stewart Hinan, he oversaw a
number of building projects across the Niagara Region including the Shaw
Festival Theatre and several public schools.
Together, Ron and Joyce enjoyed a true zest for life, travelling,
reading, classical music, a good wine, and, perhaps most of all, dancing with
finesse across many a ballroom floor, both here and abroad. He was quick of mind, had a wonderful sense
of humour, a keen interest in world affairs, and was a true role model for
life’s values of working hard, taking pride in a job well done and dedication to family. Joyce and family give special thanks to the
wonderful staff at Lookout Ridge Retirement Home and the Hotel Dieu Shaver
Hospital. These compassionate
caregivers, nurses and pastoral staff serve untiringly. They tenderly cared for Ron and supported the
family. A special note of appreciation
to Shaver’s Bonnie Voth for ‘going that extra mile’ for Ron, Joyce and Peter –
you are unmatched! Cremation has taken
place with a private family interment will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements entrusted to PLEASANTVIEW FUNERAL HOME, 905-892-1699. Online
guest register and condolences available at www.pleasantviewcemetery.ca. If so
wished, donations in Ron’s memory may be made to the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital
Foundation.
