Dr. Patrick John Thompson
Dr. Patrick John Thompson, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, died suddenly of natural causes on November 23, 2017, at the age of 83. Born at Gorseinon, South Wales, in the UK, on December 17th, 1933, he was educated at Cheltenham College in England. Thereafter, he pursued medical studies and was graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, and a Bachelor of Surgery from The Queen’s University of Belfast in Northern Ireland in 1957. Following his internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, he obtained a commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving in Libya, Germany, and the UK, until he retired from military service in 1968 with the rank of Major. He married Hilda Irene Clarke in 1959 and, after the birth of their fourth child, he and the family moved to Canada in 1972, settling in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where he practiced, for many years, on staff at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. In the latter years of his professional life, he specialized in the treatment and management of chronic pain, becoming a widely acknowledged expert in the field. He was qualified, and gave evidence, as an expert witness in many proceedings before the Court of Queen’s Bench in New Brunswick, and the Supreme Courts of Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. After retirement, he resided in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, for several years before finally moving to Halifax. Dr. Thompson is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, and four grandchildren. He was an accomplished cook, with a special affinity for East-Indian cuisine, and was well known as a witty raconteur. For many years, he was an active member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, in which he not only performed on stage in leading roles, but also worked behind the scenes, directing a number of productions himself. Many will remember him from those days and he will be missed by far many more than those of his immediate family.
