Rose was born October 18, 1933 in Lethbridge, Alberta. She passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Sunday, November 26, 2017. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Charlene Goodhand, (grandchildren, Kimberly (Darren) and Tracy Goodhand (Aleesha) and their father, John (Mabel) Goodhand, great-grandchildren, Briteney and Brett Goohand/Krell, and great-great-grandchild Aspen Carlson); Sandra (Ken) Mercer (grandchildren, Mark, Blair and Cole Merluk (Mindy) and their father, Bob Merluk; Cindy (Terry) Burton, (grandchildren Stacey and Kyle (Samantha) Burton, great-grandchild, Pyper Burton); Wendy Kallen, (grandson, Dylan (Amber), great-grandchildren, Caid and Sierra, grandson, Luke (Saige), great-granddaughter, Tennessee, granddaughter, Katelyn (Tyler). Mom was the sixth born of eight children. She was predeceased by her brothers, Matt, Mike, Bill (William), John Orich, and her sisters, Victoria Bodie (known as Pally), Lena Clements and Mary Blair. Mom was also predeceased by her husband, Albert Sawchuk in February of 2007, her second husband, Ken Maynes as well as a dear friend, Laura Afdol, just recently. She was raised in Brocket, Alberta. Mom married Albert Sawchuk in April of 1953 in St. Augustine Church in Lethbridge, Alberta, where they raised their daughters, Charlene, Sandra, Cindy and Wendy. Mom was a hardworking lady. She worked at the Lily Dale Poultry factory in Lethbridge, hoed sugar beets, Canning factory for 14 years, Bingo’s; she loved doing other people’s laundry. Mom wanted to do laundry for people in her 80’s but her health did not allow for this, she was a waitress in the House of Wong, and other restaurants and cleaned offices in her younger years. She retired at the age of 65 years from the Montessori School in Lethbridge, Alberta, which she loved. Mom always loved to joke and tease people, especially with her grandchild, Kimberly they were quite the pair, always laughing and joking around. You wouldn’t want to start a water fight with mom as she didn’t care where you were what you were wearing you would get wet. John Goodhand can attest to that. Mom loved horses, even brought one into her house. She tried barrel racing, rode in many of the Lethbridge stampede parades. In mom’s last few days here with us she would tease the staff at the Medicine Hat Hospital, teasing that there was going to be a rodeo. She loved wearing her blue jeans, snap button shirts, cowboy boots and her cowboy hat. Mom was self taught musically of which has rubbed off on her daughter, Wendy and granddaughter, Katelyn. Mom played mouth organ, guitar and could yodel. She always grew a huge garden and canned. Mom loved fishing something her and her granddaughter, Tracy often did. She loved to play cards with anyone that wanted to play adults or children. She was a farm girl at heart. Mom loved the farm life, it was hard work but she loved it and all the animals. Mom loved dogs mostly German Shepherds. Mom and dad owned the Bar X Confectionary for a while on 5th Street South in Lethbridge. On weekends our family would drive to the countryside and pick bottles and have cheese and onion sandwiches. Mom loved her cat Oscar who was about 28 years old. Mom will be laid to rest with her friend, Dave in the Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge, Alberta. Rose’s family would like to thank with grateful hearts the staff at the Medicine Hat Hospital on 4th West & 2 North and the Transition Staff for the respect they showed mom & the care they gave her. We want to thank the staff and Transition Staff at the Lethbridge Regional on 4C especially Dr. Hawes and Dr. Jensen. We thank Pastor Gary and Pastor Beth who will officiate the funeral ceremony… what a Blessing they are. We thank the staff at Cook’s Funeral Home for their patience, kindness, understanding and going that extra mile for us during this time. Last but not least, Bob Chapman who was a great friend to Mom and who was always there to help mom of which she was always grateful. The Funeral Service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, December 1, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Lethbridge, Alberta in the spring or summer of 2018.
