Obituary of Barbara Szabo
Barbara, 81, of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 27, 2017. She was born in Jászárokszállás, Hungary to Jozsef and Erzsébet Busa on October 8, 1936. In 1955, Barbara went to work in Szolnok where she met the love of her life, Karl Szabo. Barbara and Karl were married on October 20, 1956. With the outbreak of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Barbara and Karl saw an opportunity to seek a better life for themselves and left Hungary in December. After a short time in the refugee camp in Salsburg, Austria, they were fortunate enough to make their home in Regina in May 1957. Barbara worked as a cook in various restaurants. She retired in 1998 from Empringham Catering Services. Barbara was an active member of the Regina Hungarian Club volunteering many hours to the yearly cultural events. But her passion was embroidery, cooking and her family, especially her grandchildren. She expressed her love to her family through her cooking and good humour. There was always laughter, good stories, good food and love in her house. She was predeceased by her parents Jozsef and Erzsébet Busa; her brother Jozsef (Öcsi); her sisters Margaret (Maca) and Eva; her in-laws Karoly and Etelka Szabo; and son-in-law Gilbert Marshall. Barbara is survived by her husband of 61 years Karl; daughters Violet Baulin (Richard) and Eva Marshall (Shawn Besler); grandchildren Mitchell Marshall (Amanda Baron), Kaleena Baulin (David Hall), Jennifer Marshall-Harker (Landen), Brittany Flegel (Brandon), Andrew Baulin (Kaela Gee), Ashely Marshall and Kelsie Konecsni (Dylan); great grandchildren Brier and Brooks Flegel and Veyda Harker. In Hungary, mourning Barbara’s passing are her sister Zsuzsanna Oroszlan (Istvan); brothers-in-law Ferenc Garics and Laszlo Szabo; sister-in-law Margit Hajdu (Géza); and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK, on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 10:00 am. Interment to follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, SK, S4P 2R3 or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to The Allan Blair Cancer Centre, the Renal Unit at Regina General Hospital and the many doctors and nurses who made her comfortable in her final days.
