95 years
Peacefully, Sunday, November 26th, 2017 at Health Sciences North with loving family at his side.
Beloved husband of Lucienne Hrytsak (nee Lecompte) predeceased 2007. Loving father of Gary (wife Margaret), Irvin (wife Lillian), Judy (husband Craig Chaperon), Michael (wife Melanie), and Debbie Anthofer predeceased 2014. Cherished grandfather of 12 grandchildren (one grandson predeceased) and many great grandchildren. Dear son of Michael and Ann (nee Yaksiw) Hrytsak both predeceased. Dear brother of Phillip and predeceased by Stella, Nick, Joseph, Samko, Mary, Paul, and Tony. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews.
Born near Rossburn Manitoba, Melvin moved to the Sudbury area in 1942 where he married Lucienne Lecompte in 1944. A longtime resident of Garson, he worked at INCO’s Copper Cliff Smelter and Garson Mine, retiring in 1982 with 40 years service. Mel was an avid fisherman and hunter in his younger days and was a member of the Garson Fish and Game Club and a founding member of the Tam O’Shanter Curling Club in Garson. He played the banjo for personal enjoyment and as a band member at parties. He was strong of faith and a member of St. John the Evangelist church in Garson since 1945. A very resourceful man, there was nothing he couldn’t fix, design, or change to suit a purpose. During his retirement years Mel enjoyed woodworking, bird carving, gardening, and music. At the age of 94 he taught himself to play the violin and at 95 acquired an iPad which he used to watch videos of bluegrass music. Mel always welcomed visitors with a warm greeting and an invitation to sit and chat on his backyard swing.
