Frances “Ann” Sloat (nee O’Rourke)
It is with great sadness that we announce our mother’s passing, in her 90th year.
She was predeceased by her husband Donald Moore Sloat (1978), their second daughter Frances Jay Sloat-Spencer (1992), and their granddaughter Christine (1984). She will be deeply missed by her children Barbara Sloat, Donald (Louise), Vicki (Ralph) Ambrosini, Kathy (Rick) Lerette, and Michael (Linda), grandchildren Laura, Josh, Andrea, Jackie, Janessa, , Erin, Trevor, and Jaye, and 5 great-grandchildren. She will be remembered fondly by many extended family and friends.
She was born in Stratford, Ontario on July 29, 1928 and was a graduate of the Hamilton General Hospital, School of Nursing in 1951 where she was known as “Queenie” by her classmates. After having six children, she became a school trustee in Ancaster, and chaired the Wentworth County Board of Education from 1971 to 1972. She then served as Ancaster’s first Mayor from 1973 to 1984 and was Deputy Mayor of Ancaster at the time of amalgamation in 2001. She was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1984 to 1985. During her time on City Council, she also served on many local committees and boards including member of the Police Commission, Mohawk College Board of Governors, Ancaster Hydro Commission and a corporate officer of the Hamilton Utilities Corporation. She also received a number of awards including the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in 1996 and the Paul Harris Fellow award. She was also a proud member of the Ancaster Thesaurus Club. On March 30, 2017, the Ancaster Old Town Hall forecourt was officially named after Ann Sloat for her dedication to public service in the Ancaster community.
Special thanks to Dr. Pugsley and Dr. Boyle of the St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton Firestone Clinic, and to the doctors and nurses at St. Peter’s Hospital, for going above and beyond to treat and care for our mother.
