Albert Vandergaast was born in the Lemmer, Friesland on January 29, 1926 where he spent his growing up years with his 7 brothers and 1 sister. After the war the family decided to move to Canada. At the time Albert was dating Trix, a beautiful young lady who would prove to be the love of his life. They married and settled in Bowmanville and had 66 years, 7 months and 1 week together, and still holding hands till the very end. They bought the lot at 2122 Maple Grove Road where Albert built the house where he lived until November 18, 2017 the day the Lord called him to his heavenly home. Albert and Trix raised their 5 children, Gary, Jean, George, Linda and Albert in the house that became a home.
Albert was a plumber/pipe fitter by trade and worked for many years for H R Stark Plumbing and for the last 10 years before retirement in the fab shop at Darlington Nuclear. Albert enjoyed his retirement as it allowed him to peruse his many interests and hobbies. He took up SCUBA diving, learned the art of stained glass, was an enthusiastic metal detector user and continued with his first love of woodworking. He had a very creative mind and was a skilled craftsman. Many people have an example of his work in their homes. Albert was unfailing in his desire to serve others with his talents. If you need something fixed you just needed to ask.
Albert was a lifelong and faithful member of Rehoboth CRC. He served many years as an elder and loved his church family. Albert had a deep, quiet, abiding faith. He thanked the Lord everyday for the people and blessings in his life. He loved his family and was very happy when the grandchildren came to visit and, later, the great grandchildren. He was a kind, gentle and humble man, dearly loved and will be sadly missed.
The family wishes to thank VHA nurses and PSW’s. Your help, kindness, advocacy and gentle treatment allowed us to keep our husband and father home until the end. It would not have been possible without you and we are grateful and deeply appreciative.
