Constance ‘Connie’ Clark
1926-2017
Constance “Connie” Kathleen
Clark, age 91, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully at
Ivey’s Terrace in Trenton, on November 3, 2017. Born in
Maine, she was the daughter of George and Katie Ricketts, and was
raised in Saint John, New Brunswick. Connie married John
“Jack” Clark in 1948, and after a short time living in New
Brunswick, and Cape Breton, made New Glasgow their home. There she
raised a family and enjoyed a large community of friends. Connie was a
member of Trinity United Church and served with Unit O of the UCW. She
and Jack were members of the Abercrombie Golf and Curling Clubs. For
about twenty years, Jack and Connie called Fort Myers, Florida their
winter home where they enjoyed golf, dancing, and entertaining. In
1976, the cottage at Woodburn was renovated and they moved from New
Glasgow to the shores of Black Hall Gut. When Jack became ill, Connie
devoted all her energy to caring for her “John”. Since his
passing in 2000, Connie showed a remarkable independence, living on
her own in Woodburn, supported by caring neighbours and
friends. For the last five years, she lived at Shannex in
Truro, but appointments in New Glasgow allowed her to keep connected
to friends and family, and Truro became a regular pit stop for her
grandchildren and great grandsons, whom she adored, as they drove
between Dartmouth and Woodburn. Connie realized her wish of returning
to Pictou County by moving into Ivey’s Terrace last week.
Here she felt at home and she was so pleased to return.
Connie’s gifts to us are many, but it was her capacity to
manage the big challenges in her life with courage and depth of
character that was a lesson for all.
Connie is survived by daughters, Dyanna Clark, Texas; Debi (Lachie)
MacIntosh, Woodburn; grandchildren, Alison (Jonathan Fleming)
Dartmouth; Neil, Toronto; Jessica, Ottawa; great grandsons Cameron,
and Connor Fleming, Dartmouth; sisters-in-law, Francis Hamilton, New
Brunswick; Anne Ricketts, British Columbia; Irene Ricketts, New
Brunswick; Valerie Ricketts, New Brunswick; along with several nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, John
Alvanly, and her brothers, Larry, Alan, and Rick.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 8th, at 1 pm from
Trinity United Church, New Glasgow; reception afterwards in the Church
Hall. Interment at Woodburn Cemetery to follow. Donations in
Connie’s memory can be made to Aberdeen Palliative Care
Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.H. Porter
Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
