Robert Harvey Joyce was born on February 17, 1930 in Dodsland, SK to Melvin and Annie (Jenn) Joyce, the youngest of five children. At the age of 13, Bob earned the nickname “Hardhead” playing football at school with no helmet. So this was the beginning of his hardhead reputation. This nickname stuck to him right until the day he passed on Friday, November 3, 2017. He earned it early and never gave up on it. Dad farmed his whole life and worked some winters off-farm in Saskatoon in the early years. He was an avid sports fan his whole life and spent many years playing and coaching hockey and baseball. He later started refereeing hockey and umpiring baseball. His hockey refereeing took him to most small rinks throughout Saskatchewan and many SAHA playoffs throughout the province. His true love was baseball, and as soon as the crop was in the ball season was on. Dad would disappear for most of the summer weekends umpiring Senior Baseball in North Battleford, Kindersley, Eston, Swift Current, Unity, Wilkie, etc. He did many prestigious tournaments and games from British Columbia to Moncton, New Brunswick where Dad was chosen to umpire in the World Senior Baseball Championship in 1976. He got to ump in Jerry Park in Montreal and did one of the last home plate games ever played there. The highlight for Bob was seeing the Cuban team.
Dad would take us kids camping and to the lake the minute school was out in June, spend 2 or 3 days getting us set up and then off to the baseball tourneys, leaving Mom to look after us which later in life he said he regretted. We were fine as long as Bill and Karnie Turk were at the lake to take us boating and skiing as they usually did. Dad loved to snowmobile too and we really enjoyed ripping around the yard and through the fields. A love some of us still carry on doing today.
Dad started to soften when his first grandchild, Heather came along. He was a caring Grandpa, and he started to enjoy his grandkids with as much passion as anything he ever did. Right to the end, Dad watched many Hockey, Baseball, Soccer, Football, and any other activity the ten grandkids and eleven great grandkids were involved in. Dad, Mom, and Lori moved to North Battleford one year ago. He immediately fit in to the Caleb Community where he loved to visit with the other tenants and staff. Although short lived, he was really enjoying life in North Battleford. He loved going around to all the businesses and visiting, especially going to Sad Sacks for coffee with Jim and Gail in the morning and then sometimes a touch of something stronger in the afternoon. He had a season pass to the North Stars and started golfing regularly at the Golf and Country Club. Dad regularly attended church with Mom and Lori. He was always reading and doing crosswords, and had knowledge of everything. Google didn’t stand a chance. In 2006 his farm had its 100th Anniversary which was a highlight for him. Dad was very active in the Dodsland Lions Club for which he was a Charter Member. He sat on countless Boards and Committees throughout his life. Everyone knows Dad loved to drive. He died getting into his vehicle, what a fitting way to leave. Bob is survived by his wife, Isobel Martha Joyce, his children, Kerry (Kim) Joyce, Brett (Pam) Joyce, Lana (Trent) McCarthy, Lori Joyce, and son-in-law Brian Galbraith; grandchildren, Heather (Jeff) Dionne, Stephen (Sahar) Galbraith, Alison (Casey) Ellis, Shauna (Jason) Mock, Ryan Joyce, Devin Joyce, Chrysta (Trent) McDonald, Kellen (Kristyn) McCarthy, Brandon Joyce, Tracy Victoria (Eric) Nykiforuk; great grandchildren, Kyan, Owen, and Ella Dionne; Greyson Galbraith; Zoe Mock; Landon, Leyla, and Blaine McDonald; Carole McCarthy; Maxwell Weran, and Talia Nykiforuk. Bob is survived by his nephews and nieces: Melvin, Raymond, and Sue Joyce; Fred (Judy) Joyce; Tom (Peggy) Joyce; Linda (Al) Wilde; Dick, John, and Rod (Elaine) McLeod.
