Robert G. “Bob” Haley
HALEY, Robert G. “Bob” – With profound sadness, we the family of Bob Haley, regret to announce his death on November 6, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born July 14, 1939 to the late Angus and Marguerite (Maufort) Haley. He grew up in Stellarton, NS and graduated Stellarton High School in 1957. He was president of Student council and received the Birk’s Medal for Leadership at graduation. By combining studies with his career, Bob acquired a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from St. Francis Xavier University in 1960, Masters of Social Work degree in 1965, ECOM (Extended Care Organization and Management) Canadian Hospital Association in 1974 and a Masters of Adult Education degree from Dalhousie University in 1985. Bob joined the Nova Scotia Department of Public Welfare in 1961and throughout his career he was employed a total of 31 years with the department. During those years he held the following positions: provincial social assistance worker, psychiatric social worker at the Nova Scotia Hospital, executive director for Family and Children’s services of Hants county, consultant and director of Municipal Social Services, and chief instructor in both Social Services Training Programs and Staff Training Unit in the Department of Community Services. As a volunteer, he served on the Board of Directors of the Halifax Senior Citizens’ Club, Joseph Howe Group Home, King’s Meadows Group Home, The Maritime School of Social Work, The Canadian Association of Social Workers, The Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers and The Home for Coloured Children. His hands-on voluntary experiences included Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association, Canada’s Association for Community Living, Canadian Association on Gerontology, Building Bridges/Canadian Mental Health Association, Canadian Paraplegic Association, Canadian Pensioners Concerned, Committee on Aging/Red Cross, National Committee on Aging, Committee on Elder Abuse and Neglect, Help Line, Metropolitan Immigrants Settlement Association and tutoring university students. In his retirement years, Bob became an avid gardener, bird watcher, loved nature walks and spotting local wildlife. Some of his best times were spent with Marg in Bayfield on the estuary, watching the majesty of eagles in flight. He loved reading, co-authored a history of the senior citizens movement in Nova Scotia, dabbled in wood carving and jewelry design, and was passionate about opera and classical music. He was deeply devoted to his family, most particularly to his wife Marg. Bob is survived by his son. Gary Robert (Wallace); daughter, Rhonda Margaret (Ray and step-granddaughter Laura); step son-in-law, Alan King all of Halifax, and step-grandchildren, Christianne (Marc Andre and step-great grandchildren, Jackson and Cole), and step-grandson, Patrick all of Ottawa, one sister, Evelyn Marcipont (William) of Stellarton. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years, the former Margaret F. Jackson and by his step-daughter, Janet St.Germain. Visitation will take place 2-4, 7-9 pm Sunday, November 12 in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd from where a memorial service will take place 11 am, Monday, November 13. A reception will follow in the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. We would like to thank the staff of 3B at the QEII, VG Site as well as the Palliative Care team for their dedication and compassionate care given to Bob and his family.
