Cornelius Tessman Brief Bio
Cornelius Tessman was born April 5, 1925, in Podolsk, Russia, to Nicholas and Sarah (Regehr) Tessmann. His family immigrated to Canada in 1930, homesteading in central Saskatchewan. Cornie left the farm to head to Sudbury, Ontario to work in the mine, but eventually moved on to Preston, Ontario to continue his training as a machinist. He met Susanna Murley at a church social and they were wed on June 18, 1955; they were married 59 years until Sue’s death in 2014.
Cornie enjoyed a long career, and made many good friends at the various shops in which he worked over the years. He was a great fan of the outdoors, spending time hunting and fishing when he was younger. The family spent many summers camping in their tent trailer, canoeing in local lakes, and travelling to the eastern and western edges of Canada to see the sights and visit family.
Over the last few years Cornie took pleasure in puttering around his house, reading, attending bible study group at the church, walking uptown to do his errands, watching hockey and baseball games on television, and entertaining family and friends who dropped by for a visit.
Cornie passed away on Monday, October 30th, 2017 in his 93nd year while resting peacefully at Ajax Hospital.
Cornie will be sadly missed by his children Jon and his wife Elizabeth, Janice and Jeff; his grandchildren Jeffrey and his wife Lisa, and Jessica; his great-grandchildren Emma and Jaslyn; and his siblings Agnes (Richard), Margaret (Peter), Wilmer (Hertha), Ed (Joyce), Vern (Linda) and Art (Elaine). He is predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Sarah (Regehr), and his brothers Nicholas and Donald. He will also be fondly remembered by his many extended family members.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life service Tuesday, November 7th at 2 p.m. The service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, 65 Kings Crescent, Ajax, Ontario where Cornie and Sue were lifelong members. Donations in Cornie’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
