OLGA KOWALCZYK
1924 – 2017
The family of Olga Kowalczyk sadly announce her passing on October 21, 2017 at Jubilee Lodge, Kinistino, SK at the age of 93. Olga was born January 19, 1924 at Laniciw, SK east of Rosthern, to Joe and Euginia Hnatiw. Mom and her brother Walter and parents then moved to the Fish Creek, where she attended school. There she met her future husband Louis Kowalczyk whose parents also lived and farmed at Fish Creek. They were married June 2, 1942 in Fish Creek and were married for 38 years. It was during their time in Fish Creek, that their first two children, Elaine and Michael were born. In 1946 Mom and Dad then moved to Prince Albert to continue to operate a mixed farm (family homestead) and two additional children were born, Angeline and Kenneth. From 1946 to 1980, Mom worked at Frank Moore’s Market Garden and then in later years at the Marlboro Inn as a waitress. It was in the early 70’s that Jimmy Harder came to reside with Dad and Mom at the family homestead and then eventually both Dad and Mom became Jimmy’s legal guardian. Widowed at the age of 56, Mom continued to live at the family homestead. Jimmy moved away and in 1983, Peter Radyk came to reside with Mom. Together they kept the family homestead flourishing with a huge vegetable garden as well as a vast array of trees, shrubs and flowers. Similar to Jimmy, Mom came to be Peter’s legal guardian until he passed away in 1998. Mom’s greatest love was with her grandchildren visiting the family homestead. Gardening, cooking, baking, mushroom and berry picking were also an important part of her life. She also hosted many minus 1 events and parties at the family homestead. Music was a very important part of Mom’s life. Ukrainian music would always be playing either in her home or, if possible, with a live band in her yard. Mom was a devout catholic woman and became an active member of the Catholic Women’s League. Mom is survived by daughter Elaine Horychun, and granddaughter Wendy, grandson Jason (Rosie) and family, Michael (Carmen), grandson Michael Lee, Angeline Yamiolkowski and grandson Kevin (Nicole) and family, Kenneth and granddaughters Zavienne and Zamen. Mom was predeceased by her parents Joe and Euginia Hnatiw, her husband Louis Kowalczyk, brother Walter Hnatiw and sons-in-laws Bud Horychun and Alex Yamiolkowski.
