It is with a combination of sadness and joy that we bid farewell to Vivian Mayne, our amazing mother, nana (grandmother) and grand nana. After bravely battling worsening health challenges for over two years, she passed away peacefully on October 3, with her family at her side.
Vivian is survived by her daughters, Laura (Dermot) O’Neill, and Susan (Aidan) Gately; granddaughter, Sive (Christian) O’Neill; grandson, Rory (Robyn) O’Neill and grandsons, Donnacha and Michael Gately. Her great-granddaughters, Ada, Wren and Saoirse were a great source of joy for her during her last two years. She had a special place in her heart for her brother, Tony (Elke) and sister-in-law, Rose; as well as her many nephews, nieces and their families in Ireland.
Vivian was predeceased by her husband, Richard “Dick” Mayne; sisters, Enda and Deirdre; brother, Billy and sister and brother in-law, Nuala and Sonny Farren.
Born in Dublin Ireland, Vivian immigrated to Canada following the birth of her first grandchild in 1982. In Canada she started a new life, becoming involved in the Edmonton Community. Her talent as a pianist was put to great use when she joined the Centre Lion’s Music Program and led several bands including “The Dots” and “The Young at Heart”. For almost 30 years she brought her rhythmic music to comfort the sick and shut-ins of many Edmonton Care Facilities and enjoyed putting a smile on their faces and a bounce in their step. She wrote several screen plays and received the Banff Award for her original screen play, “The Glimmerman”. In 2006 she published a novel “Whom God Loves” based on the life of her father, Liam McNeive, a patriot in the 1916 Rising in Ireland.
There is much to celebrate in Mum’s life. She was unique: gentle yet tough, strong willed and ferociously independent. A great Yoga advocate, in her late 80’s she complained she was unable to include the headstand in her daily routine any longer! She did things her way and leaves a wonderful legacy of spirited determination and generosity to her grateful family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Saint Joseph’s Basilica, 10044-113 Street NW, Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, Vivian requests donations to her favourite charity, The Salvation Army. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to the wonderful caring staff of the Palliative Care Unit, Edmonton General Hospital.
