Obituary for Laurie Magee
And did you get what you wanted from this life, even so? I did.
And what did you want? To call myself beloved, to feel myself beloved on the earth.
– Raymond Carver
It is with great sadness we announce that on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, Laurie passed away with her family by her side.
Laurie was predeceased by her parents, Larry and Marion. Left to cherish her memories include her son Tyrone (Mya) and granddaughter Jada, who brought her great joy; as well her sisters Shirley(Bill), Wendy (Rick), Cindy (Wally) and her brothers Donny (Helena) and Dale (Ana). Laurie is also lovingly remembered by her partner Ron, his mother Lois, and his brothers Gerry(Laurie) and Carl (Cathy); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Laurie was a graduate of the Pysch Nursing Program in Brandon and found her professional calling in working in addictions with AFM. Her passion was working at the m.i.n.e. program focusing on opiate addiction where she became a team leader and proponent for harm reduction. Her extensive knowledge and direct approach with both clients and co workers helped develop the program over the years. Laurie believed in this Melinda Gates quote; “Sometimes it’s the people you can’t help who inspire you the most.” Laurie knew that not all the individuals she worked with would be successful, but she continued to believe in the work she was doing and in the co-workers who were there for her everyday.
Laurie enjoyed being on or near the water; whether it was trips to the Dominican Republic, fishing on Manitoba lakes or more recently being on the beach with friends at the Oasis Resort. She was a sun and water, red wine, “smoke’em if you got’ em” type of girl. She held her family and friends close to her heart and enjoyed the time spent with them. And she was beloved.
Thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and Health Care aides at the St Boniface Palliative Care Unit for their compassion and professionalism.
In keeping with Laurie’s wishes, cremation and private interment will take place. A social “come and go” gathering to celebrate Laurie will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 30, 1748 Main Street on Wednesday , September 6/17 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Laurie’s name can be made to the Dr. Lindy M. Lee Memorial Fund
(Winnipeg Foundation) or the Addictions Foundation of MB, 1031 Portage Ave.
