Joyce Crane – 1941-2017

Crane, Joyce Marie (Durdle),
75
Coxheath,
NS
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joyce
Marie Crane on Thursday, August 10, 2017, surrounded by her loving
family, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala
Unit.
Joyce was born in New Waterford and was the daughter of the
late Everett Durdle Sr. and Patricia (Samuel)
Durdle.
Joyce’s career as a Registered Nurse was perfectly suited for
her caring and compassionate ways and, after retirement, this carried
forward in the constant care she provided for her family and circle of
friends. Joyce volunteered in earlier years at the men’s homeless
shelter and Jeux Canada Games. She was an active fundraiser for
Parkinsons research and was passionate about her nursing alumni
organization.
Joyce had a full life. She was most in her element when with
family and friends. She was a social butterfly and friend to all she
met. She was an avid bowler, a beautiful skater, loved to
cross country ski, skidoo, curl and camp. Joyce was well
known for her ability to make others feel genuinely cared about and
would always take the time to listen.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Sherri (Andrew) Beresford
and Tanya Crane, both of Coxheath; sisters, Jean (Bud) Hoffmann,
Mass., Judy (Bob) Greene, Antigonish, Brenda (Steve) Pastuck, River
Ryan; brothers, Nelson, Medicine Hat, Everett Jr. (Alice), New
Waterford, Donnie (Sheila), River Ryan, Fred (Judy), Florida, Billy
(Judy), New Waterford; sister-in-law, Sheila Mercer, Sydney. She will
also be missed by many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law,
brothers-in-law, and dear friends, Betty, Donna, and Jean. Joyce was
endearingly known as “Nana Joyce” to many of her nieces,
nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She will be sadly missed by
them all, as well as her furry companion,
Brandi.
Besides her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her loving
husband of 50 years, John “Jack”, mother and father-in-law,
Marion and Joseph Crane, sister, Jean, in infancy, brother, Wally, and
sisters-in-law, Audrey Durdle and Beth
Durdle.
Special thanks to Dr. Carol Critchley, Dr. Anne Frances
D’Intino, her three “special” private nurses, Judy Greene,
Judy Durdle, and Sheila Mercer, and all that assisted in the care she
received at the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional
Hospital.
There will be no visitation. Funeral Service will take place
at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at United Protestant Church
in Sydney River, with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Following the
service, all are invited to join the family for a reception to
celebrate Joyce’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joyce’s memory can be made
to the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to the
United Protestant Church in Sydney River.
