Agnes “Nan” Miller
1927-2017
We are saddened to announce the death of our mother Agnes
“Nan” Neilson Miller of Riverview, N.B on July
13th, 2017. Nan was the Widow of Mr. Justice
Richard L. Miller and mother of Noanie (Dave) Miller-Plume, Elizabeth
(Rhonda) McLaughlin and Richard (Valerie) Miller.
Born an only child to the late William and Joan Wilson in
Sydney, N.S. she was a first generation Canadian with both parents
emigrating from Scotland. She often told the story of traveling alone
by ship from Sydney to Scotland at the age of 9 years. Her love of
Scotland never waned and many trips to the old country were enjoyed
throughout her lifetime.
Our mother left her beloved Sydney to attend Mount Allison
University when she was sixteen years old. There she studied music and
secretarial science and met her future husband. She was a gifted
singer and could have had a promising future as a soloist, but she
chose love over career.
Our parents married in 1950 and after a year in Halifax, they
moved to Moncton where our father established a law practice and our
mother made a home for all of us. She never completely gave up her
music and was a regular soloist in local churches and musical events.
Her beautiful coloratura soprano voice was unmatched in the amateur
scene and she was generous in sharing her talent over many years in
Moncton.
Our mother’s primary devotion was to her family.
Her home was her castle and she was its’ queen. She made
homemaking an art and every meal an event with her delicious cooking
and beautiful presentations. She and our father shared a love of
antiques and together made their home a masterpiece of treasures and
memories.
Our parents travelled the world during their life together
and set an example for us of devotion, loyalty, grace and service. Our
mother’s life was no longer complete after the loss of her
husband and we hope that they are finally reunited. Our
mother’s legacy continues in her grand children Jill Green,
Scott Champion, Peter, Mark, Julie and Conor McLaughlin, Erik and
David Miller, and great grand children, Cameron Green and Scarlett
Champion. She was pre-deceased by her grandson Alex McLaughlin. Nan is
lovingly survived by sisters-in-law Sadie Miller and Rachel
Stevens.
Reverend Stephen Berube will be officiating the memorial
service which will be held at Cobb’s Funeral Home 330
Whitepine Road in Riverview N.B. on Wednesday July
19th at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held
Tuesday July 18th from 2-4 PM and again from
6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the
Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, The Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Canada, or charity of the donor’s choice.
