Stewart Garth Slimmon was born the second child of Keith & Loretta Slimmon on May 26th, 1957 at Taber, Alberta. In the spring of 1963 the family moved from Alberta to a farm southwest of Virden.
He went to Laggan School for Grade one and then to Virden schools after the consolidation of all the small schools. Garth graduated from Virden Collegiate Institute in 1976. He attended the University of Manitoba graduating with a diploma in Agriculture in 1978, Garth and his brothers, Jim & Ian, began farming together.
Garth married Carol-lee Gawel on July 18th, 1981. Their first child, Tenille, was born on November 6th, 1985 with their daughter Courtney following on October 30th, 1989.
Garth loved watching the seeds grow. In later years he would complain about all of the stress – prices, weather, cost of equipment- but it never changes his love of farming. He loved animals. He raised pigs – farrow to finish- for many years. When he was busy in the field, Keith and later Carol-lee would be called upon to feed them. Keith always said that he knew he would keep the animals alive but that they wouldn’t be fed properly. Garth always had cattle. There would be times when Courtney and Tenille would be checking the newborn calves in the spring. One time they asked when a particular cow was going to calve noting she was big enough to have twins to which Garth replied that she had already calved. It was very important to him that the animals be properly fed – overfed some might say. The sheds would have to have new straw it it snowed or if they got too mucky. Once the cows were moved to pasture, they would be checked twice a day, every day.
Garth’s biggest pride and joy were his two daughters. He was so happy when they were born, so proud when they both graduated high school and later from university. He was happy when Tenille got married and provided him with his granddaughter, Brighdie, and just a few weeks ago being able to walk his daughter Courtney down the aisle. Garth was very proud of the strong and independent women they had grown into.
Garth always enjoyed visiting with neighbours and friends whether it be in a field, on the side of the road while checking the cows or an auction sale. He enjoyed spending time with his extended family whenever he could be persuaded to leave the farm! Garth enjoyed simple pleasures, going for the occasional ice cream , anniversary hamburgers, a couple days in Winnipeg with the girls. Although he never travelled far, he enjoyed every trip he did take and spending time with his family anywhere he could. Just spending time playing cards and watching movies. Even working with the animals was better when the whole family was helping him.
Garth fought a hard battle with cancer the last few years, receiving a diagnosis of melanoma in 2014. He never gave up and tried and treatment the doctors suggested. He also wanted to stay with us to see the birth of more grandchildren.
Garth was a hardworking, honest, loving and caring man who will be greatly missed by his family and by those who knew him.
Garth is predeceased by his parents Keith & Loretta Slimmon and his father and mother-in-law Frank & Louise Gawel. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol-lee; his daughter Tenille (Ian) Healey and granddaughter Brighdie; his daughter Courtney (Cody) Lee; his brother Jim Slimmon and nephews Ryan (Ellen), Matthew (Sarah) Ryder and Jackson, Andrew (Chelsea) and Azalynn, Jeremy; brother Ian (Heather) Slimmon and nieces Shauna (Dennis) Snooks, Zachary, Doire and Gil, Tish (Chris) Johnson, Josh, Lilly and Madix; sister Wendy (Richard) Wileman, Tessa (Scott), Sarah and Wyatt; sister-in-law Angela Stinson and her children Steven ( Christine) Danika and Patrick, Stacie (Curt) Pearce and Emily, sister-in-law Diane Gawel (Greg)and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
