Anthony David Whitehead – 1971 – 2017

Obituary for Anthony Whitehead
It is with great sadness that the family of Anthony Whitehead announces his passing on Monday, May 8, 2017. He will be forever loved and deeply missed by many. Anthony leaves behind his beloved wife, Tanya Stearns-Quaife, and his step-sons Jason Netzke, Reyse Netze and Colton Netzke, his parents, David and Agnes Whitehead (nee Nickle), and his sisters Justine (Ben Callaghan); Jodey and Tanya (Pat Morin). Anthony was the much loved tickle monster and uncle to Jonathan, Victoria and Bentley Whitehead and Ella and Sawyer Morin. Anthony adopted Ottawa as his home when he first came to Carleton University as an undergraduate in 1991, and he quickly found a part-time job at Ottawa’s most glamourous establishment, The Prescott. After graduation, he moved to Carlsbad, California in 1996, where he enjoyed the weather and the laid-back atmosphere (no shoes in the office) of Excalibur Technologies. Eventually, he found his way back to Carleton and academia, earning his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2004. But Southern California remained his vacation destination of choice, as the world’s best fish tacos can be found there. Anthony was most proud of his role in developing Carleton University’s School of Information Technology, where he helped to develop a thriving program of multi-disciplinary studies that offered students a practical and theoretical grounding in the field of information technology. He also co-invented an Internet filtering software (patented in Canada and the United States) with his good friend and brother-in-law, Pat Morin, which he commercialized with his company Bajai Inc. Anthony loved hockey from a young age, and played in leagues in California, where he was considered to be a star, just because he was Canadian, and continued to play in numerous leagues in Ottawa, including Carleton. He loved being outdoors, and enjoyed camping and fishing, including an annual “fishing” trip in Northern Ontario with his father and friends. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor), Ottawa on Monday, May 15, 2017 from 2-4p.m. & 6-8p.m. Memorial Service in the Chapel on Tuesday, May 16, at 11:00a.m. Reception will follow in the McGarry Family Reception Centre. As an expression of sympathy, donations to Ronald McDonald House Charities Southwestern Ontario can be made www.rmhc-swo.ca/how-you-can-help/online-donation.
