Oxby, Robert Edward
Passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday May 20, 2017 at the age of 76. Bob, beloved husband of Charlotte (nee Huette). Loving father of Sean (predeceased), Gregory, Jason (Tracy) and Diana Columbus (Curtis). Cherished grandfather of Amanda Harvey (Corey), Samantha (Jake), Faith (Spencer Gyori), Cynthia, Jessica (Beau Benham), Chloe and Sophia. Proud great grandfather of Tyson, Kyler and Olivia. Bob was successful in his many lifetime ventures – both personal and professional. After leaving home at a young age, his career began with service in the Canadian Navy where he had the opportunity to travel the world and serve his country. During this time of service, he met and fell in love with his beautiful bride (originally of Cape Breton) while stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The young couple settled in Orillia close to Bob’s parents – Harvie and Mabel Oxby of Sedowa. At this point, Bob began his long career at Fahramet (now Kubota), from which he retired as a melt supervisor. With the birth of his children, Bob began many years of coaching hockey (ice and ball), and lacrosse for which he is fondly remembered by his sons and their close friends. The young family enjoyed years of camping during the summertime and snowmobiling in the wintertime during which a lifetime of memories were made and more friendships forged. As his children aged and became more independent, Bob (and Charlotte) extended their circle of friends to include the motorcycling community where the two had the chance to once again travel. It was during these times on his motorbike that Bob often spoke of feeling closest to God. In his later years, Bob became a Catholic and was soon very active in Guardian Angels church. While able, he was an active and honoured member of the 4th degree of the Monsignor Lee Assembly (2175) of the Knights of Columbus, during which he proudly served a term as the Grand Knight. It was during this time that Bob was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Even with his diagnosis, Bob continued to serve as an active member of the Knights. As his mobility decreased, his friends in the Knights supported him and his needs so he could continue to be an active member of the church. For this kindness, he was always thankful. Bob applied himself fully to all of his endeavours and his many awards of appreciation, from the Special Olympics, the Founders Cup, the Ride for Sight, to curling, motorbiking and CB radios, continue to hang on the walls of his family home. As his battle with Multiple Sclerosis continued Bob’s activity within the community was forced to an end. At this point, Bob was continually surrounded by his family, friends, neighbours, and the dear health care team who cared for him and loved him daily. After a lifetime of adventure, his later years were spent happily with a cup of Tim Horton’s coffee, his car magazines or his favourite show on the TV. Even with mobility limited to small movements with his left hand, he faced every day with optimism, and perceived each day and each breath as a gift from God. He redefined what living with dignity means for all those who entered his world. Bob spoke briefly of his journey from this world to the next: freed of his earthly form, he plans to leave tire marks in the sand from a red convertible sports car, stopping at the first Tim Horton’s he passes, with a license reading ‘LVBONWDS’ (love beyond words).
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of the Guardian Angels, 115 West St. N., Orillia on Thursday morning, May 25, 2017 at 10:30 AM, 11:30AM social in the church hall, 1:00 PM Interment St. Michael’s Cemetery, Orillia.
