Mary Margaret (Cannon) Butler – 1939-2017

Mary Margaret (Cannon) Butler
1939-2017
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary
Butler of Moncton who left us peacefully, surrounded by her family, on
May 8, 2017 at age 78.
Born in Saint John, NB, on (or around!) January 22, 1939,
Mary was the daughter of the late Ellen (Martell) and Eric Cannon.
Growing up in Saint John, Mary graduated at the top of her St.
Vincent’s High School class of 1957, and applied her keen
mind to everything she did. Widely considered to be an expert in many
crafts including crocheting, knitting, counted cross stitch, and many
other disciplines, Mary delighted in creating her crafts for friends
and family alike – always donating the end product to the
happy recipient and never taking a dime in return. Mary was
an avid reader, and later in life applied her language skills as a
one-to-one adult tutor with Laubach Literacy New Brunswick.
Mary enjoyed travel as well, and always recounted her and
Peter’s journeys to Europe, across Canada, the US northeast
and throughout the Maritimes with great fondness.
Mary had a busy professional career in her pre-retirement
years, holding positions with the Saint John School Board, ManuLife
and CIBC, among others.
Mary found her greatest happiness in her family –
immediate and extended. She also found happiness in simple
things – the hummingbirds gathered at her bird feeder, and
enjoying the sunsets in the gazebo over a glass of wine with friends
or family.
In addition to her devoted husband of 56 years, Peter Butler,
Mary is survived by one daughter Rita Marie Leblanc (Terry) of
Moncton, and two sons, Chris Butler (Natali) of Moncton and Sean
Butler (Alice) of Ottawa. Mary is also survived by her
sisters Jean Gabriel (Joe) of Saint John, Doris Williston (Dick) of
Montreal and Rita Cosman (Scott) of Digby, NS. Mary took
great pride in her grandchildren – Andrew, Alex, Megan, Derek and
Sophie. She is also is survived by several nieces and nephews, many of
whom were able to visit with her in the last few days –
which was appreciated very much. In addition to her parents,
Mary was predeceased by her sisters Helen and Catherine, and her
beloved brother, Ernest.
A special
thank you to the wonderful staff of the Moncton Hospital, particularly
the Cardiac ICU staff and Dr. Thomas McAvinue for their
professionalism and compassion. Mary will be sadly missed as
well by the residents and staff of the Grass Home in
Riverview. Many thanks to the wonderful people there for
their care over the past few months.
Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road,
Moncton (858-1995) on Thursday, May 11 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to
9:00 pm. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Mary’s life will be
held at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, 43 Botsford
Street, Moncton, NB on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 11:00 am Rev. Allison
Carroll and Rev. Charles Broderick presiding. Reception in the Parish
Hall following the Mass. A private family interment will be held at
St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Saint John.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be
considered in Mary’s name for either the St.
Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church Building Fund or the
Canadian Kidney Foundation. Online condolences can be offered
