Edna Mary Sunley – 2017

Obituary for Edna Sunley
SUNLEY: EDNA MARY (nee Foxton) 1931 – 2017
After a long and full life, Mom passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre with family by her side. Predeceased by her husband Bob in 1993, she is survived by daughters Debby Dandy (Garth), Wanda McConnell (Rob), Laurie Sunley-Clark, and grandchildren Morgan Vinthers (Sean) and Brayden Coombs (Cheryl), Sean and Karla Dandy, Jordan and Stephen McConnell, and Whitney and Leah Clark. Her great grandson Addison Hamm, and great-granddaughters Nora and Sloane Vinthers, and Miller and Presley Coombs, were the lights of her life. Mom was predeceased by her parents John and Edith Foxton, siblings Jack, Milford, Raymond, Marjorie, and Dorothy and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. She is survived by brothers-in-law John (Sheila), Keith and Lyle (Gwen) Sunley and sister-in-law Jean Strachan, as well as a large extended family. The youngest of six children, mom grew up on a farm in Lavinia, Manitoba. She married Bob Sunley, of Decker, in 1950. Mom and dad farmed in Decker and were very active in the community for 25 years. Mom was a 4H leader, Sunday School teacher, and member of the UCW and WI. She was a gardener, chauffeur, and accomplished seamstress. In 1975, our family moved to Boissevain. For the first time, mom began working outside the home, as a clerk at the Boissevain Co-Op, and later joined the housekeeping staff at Westview Lodge. She also volunteered in the community and after she retired, that became a very important part of her life. She volunteered in the Grade 1 class at Boissevain School, and was a founding member of the Red Hat Society (now the Crown Jewels) in Boissevain. Her involvement in Boissevain United Church, UCW, WI, Palliative Care, Crown Jewels and the Camera Club earned her the 2011 Volunteer of the Year Award presented by the Boissevain Chamber of Commerce. She was a wonderful role model for us all. Mom and dad spent 42 happy years together, travelling throughout North America, and watching their family grow. After dad died, mom focused on her friends and family, always doing small acts of kindness to brighten their day. She enjoyed trips with her daughters and friends, and especially liked spending a week each summer with her daughters at Camp Waterfall on Rushing River. Her life was well lived. We’d like to extend thanks to Dr. Nell and Lois Johnson for the care and compassion they showed mom and to all of her friends and neighbours in Boissevain who were so very good to her. We also extend a sincere thanks to the staff at Victoria Landing who looked out for her while she was a resident there. The Celebration of Mom’s Life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North, on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 2 p.m. Rev. Harvey Hurren will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date at the Hamiota Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Boissevain Palliative Care, Box 889, Boissevain, Manitoba R0K 0E0 or to the Manitoba Lung Association, Unit 301-1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4C6.
