Merrilyn Joy Oakman (Lyn) of Swift Current passed away April 23, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service was held on May 3, 2017 with Annette Taylor officiating. The organist was Patti McCleary. Internment was held at Memory Gardens with Warren’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Lyn is survived by her loving husband Larry, son Darren (Desiree) and granddaughter Catharine of Houston, Texas, daughter Lesley of Swift Current, sister Carol (Howard) Clark of Regina, brother-in-law Brian (Joyce) Oakman, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father John Hunter, her mother Evelyn Hunter, her sister-in-law Barbara Lopeter and brother-in-law Richard Lopeter.
Lyn was born at Shaunavon, SK on Dec. 28, 1945 and grew up with her sister Carol on the family farm. She attended Burns Country School, was an active member of the Shaunavon 4-H Grain Club and graduated from Shaunavon High School, followed by a one year secretarial course at Beatty Collegiate in Swift Current. She worked for Health Region #1 in Swift Current for ten years before retiring to be a full time farm partner. Lyn married the love of her life Larry Oakman on June 15, 1968 and together they farmed his grandfather’s homestead west of Stewart Valley. They were blessed with two children Darren and Lesley. Lyn loved farm life, especially calving time in the spring and driving the grain truck during harvest. She loved flowers and gardening and worked hard each year to bring the yard to a profusion of color, her small greenhouse providing many local plant sales. They planted many trees and shrubs over the years to enhance the farmyard and when they moved to town, she couldn’t wait to work up some grass to plant perennials and flowering shrubs. Lyn was active in the Stewart Valley Community with staging the Horticultural Club annual show, The United Church and UCW and the local Combined Appeal, holding treasurer and secretary positions for many years. She was a project and general leader of the North Star 4-H Club and later a member of the Stewart Valley Seniors and involved at Grace Church after moving to Swift Current. Lyn enjoyed holiday golfing and was an avid Sask. Roughrider fan. Her hobbies included gardening, scrapbooking, crochet and especially cross stitching of which many were framed for wedding and family gifts. Lyn enjoyed summer camping trips with the family to Cypress Hills and around the province, and in later years with more time, extended trips to BC, Alta. and Manitoba, ‘tho Cypress Hills remained a favorite spot, as well as the annual cousin camping at Lac Pelletier. Larry and Lyn really enjoyed a holiday to Ireland, and trips to Philadelphia and Houston to visit Darren and family. They saw the 100th year of their family farmstead in 2010 before retiring to Swift Current in 2011, looking forward to much more travelling, but health problems for both curtailed these plans. Lyn’s family was very special to her and her only regret being that their granddaughter lived so far away. She very much appreciated the caring and concern of her friends and family during her illness. In her memory donations can be made to Sask.
