FIRTH, Norman Leonard Johnston
4 Dec 1941 – 28 Mar 2017
Peacefully at his home in Norval, as he wished, with his family by his side, Norman passed away after a long battle with prostate cancer. Best friend, project partner and beloved husband for 52 years of Norma (nee Flett), father of Sharon Thomson (Ewan), Janice Whittal (Scott) and Duncan (Jennifer) Firth. Treasured Grandad of Siobhan Thomson, Alec and Jocelyn Whittal, Jackson and Isaac Firth and predeceased by granddaughter Kaya Firth (2016). Norman is survived by his sister Dorothy Baikie in Orkney, Scotland
Norman was born on December 4th, 1941 in Birsay, Orkney, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1970 with his wife and three small children. They settled on an apple orchard in Meadowvale, then in 1972, to their first home on Earl Street, Streetsville. Needing additional space for his backhoe, dump truck and trailer they moved to a century home in Norval in 1978. He had his own excavating business operating under Norm Firth Excavating Ltd. and then bought his own transport truck and did LTL pick up and delivery around the GTA for the next 30 years, driving many accident free miles. He was a collector extraordinaire and his collections included everything from pieces of “useful” scrap iron, to Dinky cars and trucks, to birds eggs, to tools of every description, to old farm tractors and trailers of every shape and size. He enjoyed going to auction sales, farm sales, toy shows, car and air shows.
The family cottage was bought in 1994 just before the arrival of the first grandchild and many happy summers were spent there, boating and water skiing with each additional member of the family welcomed into the fold.
Although a quiet man, he loved a party and could dance for hours. He loved being surrounded with family and friends and a good glass of Glayva. He travelled extensively and was interested in so much.
With failing health, he continued to enjoy cruise vacations and puttering in his beloved shed. Thanks to support from the wonderful people at CaSHH, CCAC, PSW’s, and particularly Nurse Ewa Nawrocki, Dr. Brent Lamptey and Nurse Heather VandenHoek, he was able to stay home to the end as he had wished to do.
Friends will be received at the J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, north of Maple Ave., on Friday, April 7, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until a time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at 12:00 p.m. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to Cancer Assistance Services Halton Hills (CASHH), The Upper Credit Humane Society or Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum would be greatly appreciated.
