James "Jim" Millar

Harold Edgar Johnston

Obituary
Harold was born on the family farm in Dimsdale, Alberta on December 13, 1925, to Ralph and Manilla Johnston (Anderson). He was fourth in a family of seven children. He spoke of his childhood as a very happy time, playing with his siblings and going to school, (two miles up hill both ways), but with lots of hard farm work and chores as well.
As a young single man, Harold kept busy playing baseball. His love of the sport lasted his whole life. Harold attended mechanics school at SAIT in Calgary for two months every year while working as an apprentice at the Ford Garage in Grande Prairie, Alberta. He continued to work there after he was licensed, married Dorothy Jean Longson and started a family. But he was a gypsy at heart and the promise of a good job with the Canadian Army working on the Alaska Highway called them to take up their first posting at Summit Lake, B.C. From there, they made their way north, eventually landing in Whitehorse where they made their home for many years. Even in the far north, Harold loved to garden and greenhouse. He may have left the farm but farming never left his blood.
Harold is survived by his children, Susan Nelson (Ken), Greg Johnston (Zina), Doug Johnston (Ruby Roe), Don Johnston (Danielle), Patti Johnston (Lloyd Brandt), and Sandra Johnston. He leaves 17 grandchildren, Mike Leschart, Chris Leschart, Matt Leschart, Cam Leschart, Gerry Johnston, Don Johnston, Alison Pozzi, Curtis Johnston, Ashley Johnston, Angela Jackson, Jordon Johnston, Leanne Wodinsky, Andrea Forbes, Alanna Lawrence, Lisa Lawrence, Rebekah Marcellus, Jacob Marcellus. So far 22 great grandchildren have been welcomed into the family. Harold also leaves behind his brother Jim Johnston and sister Dorothy Johnston, and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was predeceased by his wife Dorothy Jean Johnston (Longson), parents Ralph and Manilla Johnston, sister Pollyanna Kilgour, brothers Ken Johnston, Clarence Johnston and Marvin Johnston.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Elks Club, 11823 – 129 Avenue, Edmonton, officiated by Reverend Stuart Jackson. Interment will take place at a later date in Grande Prairie, Alberta, where he will be laid to rest with his wife Dorothy, who predeceased him by 39 days.
Memorial donations may be made to The Elks Lodge 11, 11823-129 Avenue, Edmonton, AB, T5E 0N1, or Right to Play – Canada, 18 King Street East, 14th Floor, Toronto, ON, M5C 1C4.
