Sigga was born in Riverton, Manitoba on May 10, 1938 and grew up in Arnes, Manitoba. Valdi and Sigga were married November 3, 1956 and celebrated 59 wonderful years together.
Our mother’s parents were so proud of their daughter, and cherished who she was, and everything that she accomplished. In return, our mom truly admired her parents, and instilled that same respect in her children.
Education was a big part of our Mom’s life, and achieving it meant that she needed to be away from home a lot. After completing grade 8 in Arnes, Mom attended school in Hnausa for grades 9 & 10. This meant she needed to spend her weekdays at her Amma & Afi’s, returning home on the weekends to be with her family. After that, Gimli became Mom’s weekday home for grades 11 & 12, and upon graduating she began teaching in Washow Bay. Shortly after graduation, Mom married the love of her life, which led to her new lifelong career of being a mother. And even with raising six children, helping run the farm, and countless other responsibilities, Mom still found time to substitute teach and lead the class like she never left.
As hard as they worked, and as busy as they were, if there was a dance in a community hall in the Interlake, Mom and Dad were there, dancing the night away to the sounds of Johnny & His Musical Mates.
For Mom, family came first and family was everything. Mom lovingly raised six children, often on her own as Dad was off harvesting timber for the lumber business or farming until all hours of the night. Mom opened our home to all the neighborhood children, nieces and nephews – who came to play with us, and stayed to enjoy Mom’s exceptional cooking and baking. Whether at home at the kitchen table, or in the hayfield, the range of meals were broad and the flavour was amazing. Mom expanded her baking talent into preparing decorative cakes, which quickly became very popular at weddings and birthdays in the community and beyond.
Mom was amazing at multi-tasking, incredibly intelligent and very capable – which resulted in everyone, not just her family, wanting some of her time. At any given time, she was involved in farming activities, managing transactions in the lumber yard, preparing meals for the family & guests, household tasks, tending to her garden, transporting kids to hockey, figure skating and field hockey, volunteering on the Minor Hockey Board & countless other community activities.
Everyone that knew her, wanted to spend time with her. Her grandchildren were no different – where visits would turn into sleepovers that lasted days, and ended in them crying because they did not want to leave their Amma’s. Mom cherished her grandchildren, and the time they spent with her made them better people.
She will truly be missed by all who knew her. Love you Mom, you are together with Dad again, in his arms, dancing the night away.
Pallbearers will be Sigga’s children Valdimar, Warren, Chad, Nielle, Neals, and Jennifer. Honorary pallbearers will be family friends David Vidalin and Barry Johannesson.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Arborg Personal Care Home, and Riverton Home Care workers. A family service and interment will be held prior. Community Memorial Service will be held at the Riverton Hall, Saturday March 4, 2017 at 2:00 PM with Mona Josephson officiating. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire they can make a donation in Sigga’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba.
