Alick passed away peacefully at home, on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. Alick is survived by his daughter Cheryl-Ann (Dr. J Stewart) McMillan; and his treasured grandsons, Alick (Deanne) McMillan and Christopher (Suzanne) McMillan. He also leaves behind his special great-grandchildren, Carson, Connor, Addison, Aiden, and Aaron; his sister Marjorie Lavender; sister-in-law Phyllis Guttman; brother-in-law Andrew (Lillian) Nordal; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Alick was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Viola; his parents, Sam and Helen Ferris; brothers, Mohammed, Samuel, and Joseph (Jack); and sister Lib.
Alick was born on the 24 of September, 1924 in Lampman, SK, where he grew up and received his early education. He started working at an early age, which led into a career as an electrician. During the war, Alick was sent to Alaska to work in the power plants to facilitate the army bases stationed there. Thereafter, he returned to Saskatchewan where he worked in numerous communities until the late 1940s. Around 1947, Alick saw Viola (the love of his life) across a crowded dance floor and declared to his friends that, that was the girl he was going to marry, which he did three years later on a stormy February day arriving by a bombardier. This love story continued until Viola passed in 2014.
They were blessed with one child Cheryl-Ann and he had his world explode with joy upon the arrival of his grandsons, Alick and Chris. They were the centre of his and Viola’s world. No matter what activity, whether at home or in the community, they were there to provide encouragement and enjoy every moment. Alick was additionally blessed with five great-children, who filled him with great pride and joy.
Alick and Viola established a highly successful electrical contracting company, Ferris Electric, who over the course many years, wired many communities, as electricity was introduced across the province. In his later years, he was also involved with many ventures in real estate. Through his years in business, Alick made many friends and was always well-respected. Alick was a 50 year Mason and a Shriner with the WaWa Shrine Club. He strongly believed in the work of the Shriners because of their commitment to the health of children.
Alick served on the counsel for the village of Saskatchewan Beach, where he had his cottage. He enjoyed special times there with his family for over 50 years.
Alick will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, quick wit and humor, loyalty to friends, and devotion to family. During his last illness, he maintained his humor, positive outlook, and thankfulness for the life he’d had. Alick often said that he had no regrets and that he was the luckiest man in the world.
The family wishes to extend great gratitude to Dr. Brian Laursen for his incredible support through Alick’s illness and to the nurses that cared for him through The Nurses Next Door. Alick’s final weeks were spent at home in the care of his loving family.
