Greg Upton
February 17, 1946 – January 11, 2017
I am devastated to announce the sudden passing of Greg Upton, the love of my life, on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.
Greg and I were engaged 51 years ago, but went our separate ways a year later. Four years ago, we reconnected, by chance on Facebook. Our friendship grew into a deep and caring relationship and when I moved back to Thunder Bay to look after my parents, Greg soon followed. He was such a kind and caring man and he was my rock at the time of my parent’s deaths.
Greg’s career was with Canada Post and at the time of his retirement, he was Post Master in Medicine Hat, Alberta. After retirement, Greg moved to Baines Lake, British Columbia and he built his own home there. Greg loved music, and was a self taught drummer and guitarist. He loved to reminisce with his high school buddy, Dave Suckling, about the good time their band had playing on weekends in South Gillies in the early sixties. It was amazing how he could pick up his guitar and remember lyrics from all the old songs. He also like to play poker, his pride and joy being his “Poker Stars” jacket. A man of many talents, Greg wrote three novels.
Greg is survived by his loving partner, Sandy Pivarnik; his son Brent (Mariah) and granddaughter Caspian of Red Deer, Alberta as well as his “Thunder Bay Family” Serge, Jackie and Mariah Brochu, Myron and Pat Warywoda and his long time coffee buddy, Dave Hudema.
He was predeceased by his parents Brian and Lil Upton and his beloved son Derek.
I’d like to thank our neighbour Janice for running across the street to help me when she saw me in distress. The fire department, the police officers and the two wonderful paramedics who worked so hard to bring Greg back. I didn’t get their names, but they were so kind to me and so very caring. Thank you to Serge and Jackie for staying with me while Greg was in the ambulance and to my dear cousin Pat, for her support. You are more of a sister than a cousin and I am so grateful to have you and Myron in my life. Greg loved you both.
As per Greg’s wishes, there will be no service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street, Thunder Bay.
Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Greg to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
