Karl Weidle – 2016

On December 11, 2016, Karl Weidle of Edmonton passed away at the age of 83 years.
Karl had completed his final task of getting the Indoor Center finished at the Victoria Club and it was time for God to bring him home. Karl was born in Franzfeld, Yugoslavia August 12, 1933 of German Heritage.
Karl immigrated to Canada in 1953 with his Parents and two young brothers. They arrived in Quebec by ship and travelled three days by train to Edmonton. He had expected to work at a Dairy Farm but was told that farm employment was no longer an option. The farmer dropped him off the next day in downtown Edmonton to look for work. With a few dollars in his pocket, unable to speak English and a small suit case he walked until he came upon a Soccer Field where a game was about to start. One of the players who spoke German asked him if he could play. In his own words, “I couldn’t speak English but I could play Soccer”. He quickly became a leader on his team and found a job with the City of Edmonton through the relationships with his teammates. He held a number of managerial positions with the City and retired after 36 years of dedicated service.
His involvement with the Victoria Club started in 1953 as a player. He soon became President and over a period of 60 years volunteered his time, effort and abilities to enrich his community and his city by establishing, building and maintaining one of the top sports facilities in all of Canada.
As one of his coaches remarked “He was a Leader among Leaders”. He will leave a sports complex that all age groups can continue to enjoy for decades to come. This was his life’s mission which he successfully completed and he can now rest in peace.
Karl is survived by his wife, Johanna; son, Gordon of Atlanta, GA; grandson, Brandon; and brother, Herman along with numerous other family and friends. Predeceased by his parents, Katharina and Karl; brother, Joseph; and step-father, Emil Wolfke.
Memorial Service is Tuesday, December 20 at 11:00 a.m. at North Pointe Community Church, 14025 – 167 Avenue NW, Edmonton with Pastor Sigmar Reichel officiating.
