Obituary
Bill died peacefully in hospital on January 19 following a year of multiple illnesses. He was the eldest son of William and Joan Braden of Waterdown, father of Bradley (Lynn), Shelley Alexanian (Andrew) and Jason (Sarah), and grandfather to Harrison and Jonathan Braden; Braden, Alex and Sydney Alexanian; and Emma Braden. Older brother to John (deceased),
Norman, Gwyneth Buck, David and Michael. His wife Anita died in 2020.
Bill’s passion belonged to all things motorized. He spent his younger years racing motorcycles and avidly following his father’s boat racing career until his early death in 1958. He followed this passion into business and operated an RV dealership for 50 years, and despite his relentless work ethic, one got the impression that he spent each day pursuing his hobby. He would spend his free time tinkering on his collection of old tractors, vintage cars and vans, and his boat. At home he maintained an ever-growing list of potential projects on his Waterdown property and never sat idle, transitioning to a more supervisory role in his final years; lack of mobility would not slow down the work or prevent him from spending his days outside. This mechanical aptitude and participation in motorsports were a priority for him when raising his three children who all became involved from a young age.
Family was the most important thing in Bill’s life. As a parent he was gentle and patient; he never raised his voice but could communicate his rare anger without needing to speak. Despite his impressive ability to find common ground with anybody he met, he was not particularly social and was always content focusing on his relationships within his family. Later as the grandchildren came, they usurped his children as the most important people in the room. He always had time to listen as though you were the only person present and loved to share old stories about his father and his boating career. As Anita’s health deteriorated in her final years, he was determined to care for her even as his own health began to suffer. He never questioned making sacrifices for his family.
Bill spent his final year between the hospital and a retirement home, and very reluctantly moved from the home in which he and his siblings, and his own children, were raised. Incapable of being unproductive, he and his brother Mike undertook a restoration project on one of the boats his father raced. He was confined to bed but had extensive notes and coordinated over the phone. Wherever he is now, you can be sure that he is working.
An immediate family funeral will take place at Grace Anglican Church, Waterdown. Donations in his memory could be directed to Grace Anglican Food Bank or a charity of your choice.
