HUGHEY, WILLIAM (Bill) Sr. – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Joseph Hughey who died peacefully from cancer under the excellent and loving care of the staff at Port Colborne Hospital on February 25, 2023. Bill’s legacy leaves behind wife Yolande (Yogi); children Leslie (Chuck), Billy (Lisa); grandchildren Shannon – predeceased, Joey (Danielle), Sara, and Shauna (Adam); and great-grandchildren Lochlan and Beau. He is predeceased by his father Bill, mother Margaret, and sisters Margaret, Pearl, Joanie, and Betty. He also leaves behind a large number of extended family and many close friends. Bill was both an iron-worker and millwright. He worked at the Ontario Paper Company for 32 years where he was widely respected as an extremely hard-working, “get things done” kind of man. Bill served in the Canadian Air Force from 1959-1964. A true original, Bill lived life to its fullest. He was active fishing and hunting, spending much of his time in the bush, on the water, and in nature generally. In the company of a wide variety of family and friends, Bill and Yogi travelled together across Canada and the world (often in their truck and camper). Above all, Bill enjoyed spending time with these family and friends. He could always be relied upon to lend a helping, knowledgeable, and skilled hand to anybody that asked. Though a hard worker, Bill knew how to enjoy himself and was a fun and constant presence at all social gatherings. His unique sense of humour, his 1,001 sayings, his insightful comments and perspectives, and his kindness will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery (Veteran’s Section) on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 4, 383 Morningstar Ave., Welland on Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 1 to 4 p.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or War Amps.
