In His perfect timing, the Lord called to Himself his child, Bill Smouter, on August 26, 2023. Loving husband to Frederika “Freda” (nee Kuntz) for 63 years. Beloved father to Eleanor (Peter) Boeringa, Ron Smouter, Marjorie (Richard) Bergsma, and David (Tonya) Smouter. Opa to Michael (Alisha), Rachel (Wes), Taryn (Chris), Kathryn (Wayne), Dave (Miranda), Sarah (Andrew, fiance), Alexandra, Mikal, Wes (Amy), Hannah (Matt), Jessica (Greg), Joel (Becca), Olivia (Josh), Jared, Kenan, and 23 great-grandchildren.
Brother to Johanna (Adrian) Peetoom, Janny (Hank†) Stassen, Toinette (Fred†) Stassen, Meg (Will) VanRooyen, Marianne (Bart) Henstra, and Hanna (Ben) Harsevoort.
Predeceased by his parents, Bastiaan and Margaretha Smouter and his infant brother, Basje.
Bill immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands with his family in 1952. He began his career in finance with the Bank of Montreal in 1953. After a series of moves across the country with their four children, Bill and Freda settled in Ancaster Ontario, where he left the bank and took up a position in the finance department of Redeemer University. After retirement in 1997, Bill and Freda enjoyed the blessings of family and occasional travel, while he continued serving on church councils, committees, and boards. In His perfect time, the Lord called Bill out of this life and into the joy of heavenly glory.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, August 31, 2023 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at PROVIDENCE CANADIAN REFORMED CHURCH, 582 Southcote Rd., Ancaster. A Memorial Service will take place at the CANADIAN REFORMED CHURCH OF ANCASTER, 575 Shaver Rd., Ancaster, the following day, Friday, September 1, 2023 at 12 p.m. Private Interment to precede the service. A livestream of the service will be made available below under “Events”.
