William Anthony (Bill) Young passed away peacefully and gently on July 5, 2023 surrounded by his family and close friends, at the age of 86 in Ottawa at the Rockcliffe Retirement Residence. He will be dearly missed by his daughter Laura, his son John and his grandchildren Sarah and Tea and Liam. Bill’s pride in their many accomplishments remained a sustaining highlight of his life.
Born in Syracuse, New York on February 19th, 1937, he was pre-deceased by his parents Dr. William Young and Margaret (O’Connor) Young and his brother Robert Young. He was divorced from and pre-deceased by his first wife, Dr. Lynne Young (Weiss), and pre-deceased by his beloved second wife, CBC Broadcaster, Marguerite McDonald. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Kathleen Young and his niece, Anne Young but was pre-deceased by his niece Kerry Anne Young.
Following his early education in Syracuse, he attended St, Michael’s College at the University of Toronto, where his talents in English Literature were recognized by conversations with the distinguished Marshall McLuhan, and upon graduation, by the award of the Governor General’s silver medal for English in 1959.
Subsequently he studied at Harvard Law School, then on a Fletcher Fellowship, graduating with a Masters Degree at the Fletcher School of International Law. With no openings in the US Foreign Service, he initially accepted an English Teaching Fellowship at St. Michael’s College.
From there, his wide experience and talents led to an interesting career where he was hired by CBC and challenged together with co-creator, Poet Phyllis Webb to create a new radio program, which became the successful “IDEAS” series. Even now IDEAS continues after more than 50 years on the air. In his later years, his favorite assignment was with NATO, then led by Lord Peter Carrington, as head of NATO Information during the challenging “Cold War” era.
Bill’s family would particularly like to recognize and thank the staff of the Rockcliffe Residence for their unstinting and fine care of Bill over his 8 years of residency, particularly Bembinda (Binda) Amorim, as well as his several doctors and their health teams who supported him through his various health challenges. Bill was a great reader and also enjoyed keeping in touch with long time and more recent friends. He valued too keeping abreast of world developments and stimulating conversations with various groups.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday July 10th at 12 noon at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church, 212 Old Chelsea Rd. Chelsea Qc. Internment at St. Stephen’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shepherds of Good Hope would be most welcomed and appreciated.
