Obituary
BELONG, Victoria Mabel “Queenie” – Age 93
It is with deep sadness, we the family of Queenie Belong announce her passing Thursday July 20th 2023.
Born July 2, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Helen (Weir) and Amos Oickle.
Queenie was a strong, independent hardworking woman, devoted mother and grandmother. Queenie worked full time out of the home after raising her family. She worked tirelessly as a housekeeper in Shelburne and grew very attached to her employers over the many years. This career spanned over 50 years until she reluctantly retired at the age of 90.
Queenie loved to garden. Many properties today have the red and yellow rose bushes she raised with loving care on her property. Queenie was also an avid berry picker, which gave rise to the much coveted freezer jam so many of her family enjoyed every season. Other family favourites from “Nannies” kitchen were mustard pickles, and a wide range of baking goods her grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed.
Queenie was also an avid walker while her health permitted. She could be seen most evenings, rain or shine walking between her house and the Sandy Point Light. She enjoyed seeing her neighbours along the way.
Queenie loved to knit and would donate those treasures to the IWK and the Salvation Army. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren (and their friends) loved “Nan’s” mittens and hats. A new batch every winter.
Although Queenie was a shy and quiet person she truly relished each and every act of kindness bestowed upon her by her friends and family, especially in her retirement years. Whether it was a phone call to see how she was doing or a stranger stopping to help her with some yard work or anonymous lawnmowers, she genuinely appreciated the generosity bestowed upon her.
She is survived by her sister Joan Firth, children; Jessica (Larry), Leslie and Josephine. Grandchildren; Vicki, Tammy, Lisa (Quent), Teddy, Kim (Paul) and Scott and Great grandchildren; Emily, Tyler, Devon, Abbey, Nate, Ella, Bryson, Cassidy, Cade and Cordell.
She was predeceased by her baby daughter Barb, husband Roland and brother Norman.
Arrangements are under the care of Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. As per her wishes there will be no service but a public visitation will be held at Huskilson’s Chapel, 58 Bulkley Street Shelburne from 2-4 pm on Monday July 24th. Burial will take place at the Upper Sandy Point Cemetery. Donations in her memory can be made to the Juniper House, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
