It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of Valerie Lillian Garland at Hamilton General Hospital on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 in her 65th year. Beloved wife of William James “Bill” Garland. Loving mother of Derek (Ashley Foster) and Tanya (James) Rowlands. Proud Nana of Troy, Brooklyn, Sean, William, Everly, Charlotte, Liam, and Ethan. Step-mother of Rod and Oscar. Predeceased by her parents Alvin Nelles and Catherine “Kay” Nelles (nee Gallant). Survived by her siblings Sharmaine Nelles (Emmanuel Mbaya), Deborah “Debbie” Young (Gregory “Greg” Harrison), Wendy Ellis, and Jane Nelles (Kevin Beard).
Valerie was a caring and loving individual, always going above and beyond to support others in any way she could. She was a natural caregiver. This was demonstrated through her ongoing contributions as a foster mother to over 90 children privately and through the Hamilton Catholic Children’s Aid Society over a 10-year period. Valerie’s 23 years spent as a franchisee with Second Cup became yet another way for her to connect and impact the lives of many in a very meaningful way. Even after retirement she earned her Diploma as a Personal Care Worker showing how compassionate she was to the well being of others.
She valued every moment she had with family and friends. She was an ambitious and courageous woman that consistently demonstrated the balance of both patience and perseverance. She was filled with life and people gravitated to her natural ability to lift their spirits. She leaves all of us with many wonderful memories.
Visitation will be held at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown on Monday, March 13, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 715 Centre Rd., Waterdown on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 11 a.m. followed with a reception in the church hall. There will be a private family interment at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Freelton at a later date. If desired, donations would be appreciated in memorial of Valerie to Heart & Stroke Foundation, Hamilton Catholic Children’s Aid Society or Stella’s Circle (St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador).
