Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of Uliana Catherine Fisher of Cold Lake, Alberta announces her passing on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at the age of 96 years.
Uliana Catherine (nee Kay) was born June 8, 1926 in Byozalak, Poland to Luka & Iryma Szabarowski. Catherine will be forever remembered and loved by her children: Dale (Athina Banou)Fisher, Linda (Fred) Repin, Debbie (Edmond) Wooldridge, Terry (Dawn) Fisher, Donna (Wayne) Gallant, Brenda (Bill) Hokiro, Diane Wiebe; twenty-one grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren: son-in -law: Gary Keen; as well as many other relatives and friends.
Catherine is also lovingly remembered by her sister: Marie Kjelland.
Catherine is predeceased by her husband: Wilfred; parents: Luka & Iryma Szabarowski; brother: Roderick; sons: Kenneth & Roderick; daughter: Mariann.
In 1929, Catherine immigrated to Canada with her family. They settled in Hylo, Alberta. Afterwards they sold the family farm and moved to Edmonton. Catherine met Wilfred, who was in the military, in Edmonton, at a dance. They were married in 1951 and welcomed six children. After losing a child, Kenneth, they were transferred to Whitehorse, Yukon, in 1958, where two more children were born. Then it was off to Comox, BC where the last two children were born. In 1967, Wilfred was transferred to St. Jean, Que. for three years. Cold Lake was the next place that the family was sent too. The final posting was Moose Jaw, Sask. in 1974. When Wilfred retired in 1979, they moved to Sydney, BC, Catherine wasn’t happy there because most of her children lived in Alberta, so they moved to Cold Lake. In all the years of military life, Catherine never complained, she followed Wilfred where ever he was transferred. She considered it an adventure.
Catherine loved gardening and taking care of her flowers. You could give her a near death flower and she would revive it. She had a green thumb. Catherine favourite pastime was going for walks. She walked everywhere. She had no desire to get a driver’s license. Catherine spent a lot of time sewing and mending clothes. Another favourite thing that she loved to do was dance. She attended all the dances she could and became a social butterfly.
Catherine was known for her witty ways and comments. People would love to hear her comments because she said it as it was. She never sugar coated anything. Catherine was also known as Baba. Everybody called her Baba no matter whether they were family or not. She loved being a Baba (nee grandma); she took her roll very seriously.
Visitation, Saturday, February 18, 2023 from 8:30a.m. to 11:00a.m. at Memento Funeral Chapel, Cold Lake, Alberta. Gathering after visitation from 11:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. at 784 Wing, Cold Lake, Alberta.
Memorial tributes in memory Catherine may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.
Respectfully submitted by the family.
