Edward George Henry Howes “Ted”, passed away peacefully on September 19th at Peterborough Regional Hospital at the age of 92.
Born in Windsor, Ontario in 1931, Ted was raised in Toronto, where he met and married his beautiful wife Jean. They wed in 1950 and together they raised 4 children.
Ted’s had a successful career in the building supply industry as an innovator, a visionary, top producer and strong leader.
Ted and Jean left “the Big Smoke” as he called it, in 1975 to enjoy many wonderful years of country living near Orangeville, Ontario.
They moved to Lindsay, Ontario in 2000, happily embracing retirement living at Rivermill Village.
Known for his sense of humour and infectious smile, Ted put everyone at ease and was an instant friend to all who met him.
Ted and Jean were lifetime golfers, greatly enjoying both the game and the friendships they made along the way.
Ted and Jean also enjoyed playing harmonica, especially the duets they performed for family and friends.
From his early youth and into his senior years, Ted was an avid hockey player and in the early 1950’s was assistant coach to the Toronto Marlies hockey team.
Ted also had a passion for horse racing. Though he studied the betting forms thoroughly, he gained a reputation for “Ted’s Terrible Turf Picks”. Meanwhile, Jean had great luck placing bets on the horses and riders whose colors she liked most.
During his 80’s, Ted became a self taught acrylic artist and created lovely landscapes and portrait paintings, gifted to family and displayed at Adelaide Place Retirement Home in Lindsay.
Loving father of Philip (Debbie) of Peterborough, Deborah (Brent Zuskan) of London, ON, Jo’Ann Alderson of Toronto and Linda Howes of Tamworth.
Grampa Ted of Christopher, Shawna, Darryl, Daniel, Corinne and John. Great Grampa Ted of Tristan, Tavia, Tyson, Jaden, Brett and Troy.
Ted also leaves behind his sister, Joyce, and her husband, Murray (Richardson) of Peterborough.
Predeceased by his wife, Jean (2012) and his brother Keith (2022).
He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Ted liked to sing this song to his loved ones when they were blue. His crooner version turned many frowns upside down.
“When you’re smilin’, when you’re smilin’
The whole world smiles with you
When you’re laughin’, when you’re laughin’
The sun comes shinin’ through
But when you’re cryin’, you bring on the rain
So stop that cryin’, be happy again
Keep on smilin’, ’cause when you’re smilin’
The whole world smiles with you”
To honor our dad’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. We invite you to please celebrate Ted privately the way he’d like most – with a big smile.
