Sylvia Marie was the first child born to Donald and Clara Carriere. They were a family of 12 and she grew up in Cumberland House. She attended Charlebois School until Sylvia left at the age of 16 to work as a custodian at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon; she graduated high school in Prince Albert. On February 15, 1969, Sylvia married the love of her life, Larry Crate. Together they had two beautiful children, Laureen and Quentin. Sylvia always said she didn’t have to go through the labor and pain for her 3rd child (Larry Nook), whom she raised as her own son. Her world was shattered with the untimely death of her husband Larry on February 7th, 1980. With the loss of her husband, she knew she would be facing difficult times ahead. She had 2 young children to take care of. She persevered as a single mom and raised her children to the best of her ability. Sylvia also had 4 grandchildren, who she loved and cherished with her whole heart: Jeff, Payton, Quentin Jr., and Nancy.
Sylvia enjoyed her vegetable garden, as well as fishing, hunting, trapping and camping with her family. She also really enjoyed cooking meals and baking.
One of her favorite past times was cleaning the catholic church. She took great pride and joy in spending endless hours cleaning and making sure everything was spic & span! Sylvia worked for the Northern Village of Cumberland House as a Community Health Worker from 1981 to 2012, a total of 31 years. She was a very important member of the Health Care Team, assisting doctors and nurses throughout these years. At the age of 65, she retired. Sylvia was a devote Catholic. Her faith was deep. She spent many hours keeping prayer, attending evening and Sunday masses and saying her rosary. After a brief illness, Sylvia passed on Feb. 11, 2023 at 6:19pm surrounded by her loving family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Larry (Mischik) Crate; her father, Donald Carriere; her sister, Evelyn Cook, her inlaws: Robert and Melanie (Nabess) Crate; brothers-in-law: Danny Crate, Victor (Noella) Crate and Louis Nabess (Louweegee); and her sisters-in-law: Judy McLeod, Noella Crate and Lorraine Crate.
She is survived by her mother, Clara Carriere (Morin); her daughter, Laureen (Ferlin) McKay; and sons, Quentin Crate and Larry Crate; her brothers: Alex (Mary), George (Bernadette), Jim (Darlene), Donald, Tony and Isadore; her sisters, Audrey (Frank) Flett, Doreen McKay, Alvena Baptiste, and Edith Kadachuk; her grandchildren: Jeffrey, Payton, Quentin Jr., Nancy, Eric and Mikayla; her great-grandchildren: Lexess, Sylvia-Anne, Charlie, Koree, Kenzie, Lincoln, Emori and Avree; her sisters-in-law: Rachel (Donald) Fiddler, Elaine Crate; her brothers-in-law: Brian Crate, Clifford Crate, Gregory (Myrtle) Crate, and Ronald Crate; Her Uncle Pierre Carriere and her Aunty Flora Smigel; her special friends and colleagues: Valerie Warriner, Laurette Thomas, Christie Crane, Lorraine Chaboyer, Shirley Carriere, and Judy McDonald; and all the numerous nurses and Health staff she worked with throughout the years.
Sylvia will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Her memory will never be forgotten.
