Sylvia Irvine May (nee Burrell) died peacefully on Friday May 26, 2023 in her 95th year. Sylvia leaves behind friends and an extended family who will miss her presence every day. Sylvia is best remembered for her wonderful sense of humour and her generous spirit. Sylvia worked at McMaster Hospital on the Maternity ward for 23 years and was a reservist with 23rd Service Battalion (Hamilton). Sylvia is predeceased by her son Andy (Janet). Survived by daughters: Julie McIlroy (Neil), Lisa May (Seamus), Kerri Lang (David). Sylvia loved her large extended family. Grandchildren: Kelly Rizzo (Stuart), Cindy May-Mann, Matthew Rizzo (Anne),Tara May-Russ, Chloe May (Graeme), Erin Cassan (Blake), Jillian Cline (Josh), William May, Shannon Henwood (Steven), Alexandria May (Cody), Gwen May-Siozios, and Liam May-Siozios. Sylvia has 14 great-grandchildren: Mitchell, Quentin, Carson, Catiana, Olivia, Kevin, Hannah, Parker, Brinleigh, Hayden, Austin, Louise, Scarlett, Mason, and is expecting the 15th in August.
We are grateful to the staff of Alexander Place, Home Area 3, for the care and compassion they showed Sylvia and those who loved her. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Freelton Strabane United Church (Seniors Outreach Program) or a charity of your choice.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Sylvia’s life will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Freelton Strabane United Church, 1565 Brock Road, Strabane. We welcome all friends and extended family to join in sharing memories made with Sylvia.
