Sun T. Ma passed away on March 1, 2023, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital following a brief struggle with thyroid cancer. He was 72.
Born in Guangdong, China, Sun spent a few years in Hong Kong before immigrating to Kandahar, Sask., with his family. He worked hard at the famous Kandahar Steakhouse alongside his sister, Ding, and served food for what seemed to be every politician in the province, including future prime minister John Diefenbaker. He also played hard, hunting gophers with his brother Chuck, feeding steak to his vicious pet rabbits, and occasionally slamming rivals through the boards at the local hockey rink.
After receiving his Diploma in Electronic Technology from the Saskatchewan Technical Institute, Sun landed a job with Transport Canada which is now NAV Canada. His 35 years with that company took him from coast to coast to coast designing and building air operations centres. He ran communications for Transport Canada during the 1988 Calgary Olympics, ate delicious food at various restaurants, and performed impromptu eye surgery on a man using some tweezers and an electromagnet.
When not travelling the nation, Sun was at home in St. Albert with his wife, Lin, and their three children, Mike, Kevin, and Helen. He was an engineer at heart, always building sheds, tuning bikes, or fixing electronics, drawing intricate plans for each on graph paper. He would often go out cycling or golfing with his kids, or spoil upcoming plot twists for them while watching movies on TV. Though he set aside his hockey stick following a knee injury, he never lost his love of the game, and spent many hours cheering and cursing his favourite team, the Edmonton Oilers.
Sun retired in 2008 and moved to Edmonton in 2015 with Lin. His later years were challenging ones, as he lost a sister, brother, and both parents in less than 10 years, and was diagnosed with kidney failure. A transplant in 2013 seemed to give him new zest for life, as he explored new hobbies, renewed bonds with his kids, and speed-walked every day around Beaumaris Lake. His end came suddenly, and he left this world with his wife and children at his bedside.
Sun was predeceased by his parents, Sute Fan and Mee Ying, sister Ding, and brother Chuck. He is survived by his wife, children, and his sister Moonny.
Funeral Service will be held at Connelly McKinley Funeral Home, St Albert Chapel, 9 Muir Drive on Saturday March 11, 2023 at 2:00p.m. followed by interment at Northern Lights Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sun’s memory to the Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton.
