Stefan Philip Jurkovic, beloved husband of Doreen, formerly of Maryfield, Sask., passed away at Deer View Lodge, Wawota, Sask. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at the age of 76 years.
Stefan was born in Munich, Germany on June 17, 1947. He was the middle child of Stefania (Stella) Jurkovic (Onyszko) and Stefan Jurkovic.
Stefan, along with his parents and older sister, immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in January, 1949. On September 12, 1958 Stefan became a Canadian citizen.
In 1967 Stefan graduated from Gordon Bell High School, Winnipeg. He was a talented artist and won many prizes while in high school. He was very proud of the mosaic he helped to create, and which is still in the hall of the school.
After an honourable release from the Canadian Armed Forces, Borden in 1969 he returned to Winnipeg. He then obtained his Hotel and Restaurant Administration Diploma.
It was in Winnipeg that he met Doreen White, his wife of 47 years.
In 1976, Stefan and Doreen moved to Maryfield, Saskatchewan where they have remained. Their daughters, Alexis Cherise and Chelsey Yvette were born just down the road in Moosomin. He has always been very proud of their accomplishments.
In order to find employment in a rural community, Stefan studied heavy duty repair at Kelsey, Saskatoon. Some of his favourite memories were of having had the opportunity to work at Cape Dyer, Nunavut; Hull Beach on Cambridge Bay; the beauty of Eastern Canada; and to be a Hydro Vac Operator in the oil field.
Stefan was a Village of Maryfield Councillor from 1993 – 2006. With that position came the opportunity to be on the boards of the Maryfield Library, Maryfield Auditorium , Moosomin Care Home, Wawota Care Home, and Sunrise Villa to name a few.
Stefan’s friends and family will remember him for his culinary skills. The best shrimp dinners ever for special occasions were served in his home. These occasions often ended with card or board games. He was a great chauffeur for shopping trips and road trips as well.
In his retirement, his interests turned to metal detecting and Ham Radio.
Predeceased by his parents, Stefan will be remembered by his wife, Doreen; daughters, Alexis Jurkovic (Nigel Weber) and Chelsey (Tyler)Studer; his grand children Neva, Noah, and Violet Weber; Nico and Mietta Studer;
his sisters, Kathy (Larry) Sutherland and Darlene Susan (John) Jurkovic (Bracken); three nephews; and numerous dear friends who became part of the family circle.
Keeping with Stefan’s wishes there will be no funeral.
