1927 – 2023
Stan passed peacefully, in the early hours of January 29th, aged 96. He is survived by his children, Laura (Wayne), Linda (Rick), Robert and Dwayne; 5 grandchildren, Kristin (Gerrit), Amber (Blaine), Pamela (Chris), David and Patrick (Sarah); 6 great grandchildren, Emmalee (Adam), Ozzy, Anden, Jack, Sawyer and Charlie; his sister Patricia, and many nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Simon and Ruth, wife Joy, son Tom, daughter Beverly and brother in law Grant.
Once Dad turned 18, he volunteered for the Air Force serving on a Search and Rescue vessel patrolling Canada’s West Coast.
With the war over Stan returned home, to work with his dad in Westlock. There he met and married Joy (Schmidt), his wife of 67 years. For a time, Dad worked on survey crews around Alberta, then started with Northwestern utilities in Edmonton where he became one of their original computer programmers in 1964. Stan retired from the Gas Company as a Systems Analyst about 1990.
Dad and Mom enjoyed a long and productive retirement, often travelling with the “Godfrey Gang” on geological trips from Alberta to England, Africa and beyond. They volunteered with their IOF (Independent Order of Foresters) friends, raising funds to establish or support The Hope Foundation, The Zebra Child Protection Centre, Crime Stoppers and Constable Ezio Faraone Park amongst many.
Dad was a student all his life, he loved to read and learn, then share his knowledge. He also lived for music with a huge collection of records and CDs from the 40’s to present day.
Respecting Stan’s wishes cremation has taken place. His urn will be interred in the Westlock Cemetery beside Joy. Dad did not want a funeral.
We wish to express our gratitude for the care both Stan and Joy received at the Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre. Also, to Dr. D. Korzenowski for his decades of care for Dad and Mom, and Dr. Surmawala for her guidance and care during Dad’s final years.
