Smith, Andrew Malcolm
October 3, 1933 — June 5, 2023
Andrew Malcolm Smith passed away in the early hours of Monday, June 5, 2023, after a lengthy and courageous battle with heart and kidney disease.
Andrew was born on October 3, 1933, in London, England to George and Oliffe Smith. He was educated in England, became an Associate and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales then became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia.
He married Beryl (née Dibsdall) on October 18, 1958, in Bexleyheath, England.
He and Beryl moved to Canada in the spring of 1965 to pursue new opportunities for his growing family. Beryl was pregnant with their first child, Hilary, who was born later that year. They made their way to Quesnel, BC where Andrew joined the accounting firm Rigsby Lee. Nine years later, Andrew relocated his family, which now included Richard and Stuart, to Williams Lake, BC to become partner in the accounting firm Elfstrom Smith & Co. He continued working at Elfstrom Smith until his retirement.
When Andrew was not working or spending time with his family, he was active and contributing to his community. He was treasurer for the Williams Lake Hockey Association; treasurer for the Williams Lake Trail Riders Association; a member of the Kiawanis Club of Williams Lake, where he was awarded ‘Kiwanian of the Year’ in 1986 and again in 1996; and a member of the board of directors of the Cariboo College from 1977 to1987 including acting as Chairman during the years 1979 to 1982.
Upon his retirement in 1996, Andrew and Beryl moved to West Kelowna, BC where he continued his community service volunteering with Community Policing with the RCMP up until his last few years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beryl; his three children Hilary (Tanya), Richard, and Stuart (Sarena); and his grandchildren Alex, Adam, Malcolm, and Martin.
Dad, we love you and miss you more than you will ever know. You were the cornerstone of our family; someone we could always turn to for advice and support. You never judged while we made our mistakes learning this thing called life but were always there to help pick up the pieces when things did not turn out as planned. Thank you for all you did. We are who we are today because of you.
There will be no service by request. The family wishes to thank all the nurses and doctors at Kelowna General Hospital and the first responders for their rapid response and compassion.
