Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Sharon Dale McDonough announce her passing on Wednesday May 17,2023 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Digby, Nova Scotia in 1945, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Kathleen ( McCumber) Smith. Sharon is survived by her long time partner, James Black, her daughter Tonya McDonough (Philip Wilson) of Ajax, Ontario and son Tyson (Kim) of Saint John; her sisters Lynn Black (Malcolm) of Seattle, WA, and Pam Smith – Sproul (Gary) of Saint John; her grandchildren Alexandra Wilson of Ajax, Ontario, Courtney McDonough of Edmonton, AB, Justin Rathje of Saint John, and Reeve McDonough of Saint John, and by endeared nieces Ashley Sproul (Les Eccleston) and Dr. Erin Williams (Chris), other nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends. As well as her parents Sharon was predeceased by her former husband Malcolm McDonough and her sister, Wendy Norwood.
Sharon will always be remembered as a gentle soul with a warm heart and an infectious laugh. Sharon graduated from the Commercial Program at Saint John Vocational School and worked as a secretary in Moncton, Whitehorse Yukon, at St. Joseph’s Hospital and at the Saint John Regional Hospital up until her retirement. She was a hard worker and a reliable employee. She spoke highly of all her experiences and was most fond of her former boss, Margaret Melanson.
Sharon had a passion for history and often recounted stories related to the war and the sights she saw while living in Germany. Although she grew up in the city, she loved St. Martins and enjoyed many walks on the beach collecting sea glass. In retirement, she became a tour guide for St Martins with Aquila Tours. She went the extra mile cutting clippings out of the newspaper and making scrap books to ensure that her guests got an accurate picture of the rich history of Saint John and St. Martins.
Sharon’s greatest gift was her love and devotion to her family especially her grandchildren. Together Jim and Sharon provided a home away from home where kids stayed for as long as they chose enjoying their hospitality and her famous date and arrowroot squares and her delicious chocolate cake.
Although the last few years were challenging, Sharon remained cheerful and never complained. The family is most grateful to Dr. Linda Stephenson who faithfully supported us and Sharon through her journey.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB (506-646-2424)
As per Sharon’s wishes, a family graveside service will take place in July. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated by the family.
