It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of (Maxwell) Scott Roebotham on Tuesday, September 8, 2023 at the Long Term Palliative Care Unit , Corner Brook. Scott was born in Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island on November 19, 1949 to Fred and Dorothy Roebotham.
He left Fogo Island in 1967 and travelled to St . John’s for university where he met Sandra Sheppard. The two started as friends and became close as university wore on, getting married on june 21, 1971.
They moved to Corner Brook and took jobs as teachers, building a house and raising a family in Humbermouth where Sandra also grew up.
Leaving to mourn with cherished memories are, his loving wife Sandra and his two children, Wendy Hogan (Bruce) and Matthew (Julie), his grandchildren Madeline (Matthew), Seamus (Brooklyn ), Alice and Suzanna, his siblings Howard and Ruby, as well as his many treasured friends. He was predeceased by his siblings Hilda, Gord, Faye, Rex and Ted.
Scott was a well-loved teacher and administrator in the Corner Brook School System and retired in 1999. He is fondly remembered by both colleagues and students for his dry wit and actual love of teaching.
Scott enjoyed a long retirement with Sandra amongst the company of their many close friends, and taking every opportunity to try new types of food, discover new scotches and drink good strong coffee. He loved playing golf with his friends and was known to bring his clubs with him when traveling in case a tee time might be possible. Scott was fiercely committed to family and had a deep fondness for Stilton cheese. He made sure to always be on the hunt for some on his many visits to his children and grandchildren in New Brunswick and Ontario / Nova Scotia.
Scott was also very good at a party. He would often be handed a guitar at various parties and holidays and had a long list of songs to play that everyone loved and knew. He was fun, funny, sarcastic and extremely patient. We love him and will miss him dearly.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of 4NA Health Sciences Center and staff of the Palliative Care, Western Health. We are grateful for their care and compassion.
In keeping with Scott’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held at the Glynmill Inn on Tuesday, September 12th between 4-7. All are welcome.
As an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers, dontations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Corner Brook Food Bank.
