Obituary For Scott Gregory Hornbrook
November 30, 1964 – April 21, 2023
It is with very heavy and broken hearts we announce the passing of Scott Gregory Hornbrook, on April 21, 2023, at his home in Grovedale, Alberta, after a lengthy battle with COPD.
Scott is survived by his wife Dannette, and children, Justin, Brittany, Reece (Mariska), Tessa, Leland and 8 grandchildren. Scott is also survived by his father, Franklin Hornbrook, his sister Sheriden (Keith) Mackenzie, brother Jeremy (Rhonda) Hornbrook, several aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Scott was predeceased by his mother Iris Hornbrook in August 2021 and his older brother Roland in 1964.
Scott was born in Victoria, BC, and lived in Victoria for eight years before moving to Caycuse, a logging camp on Cowichan Lake. As a child, Scott was a daredevil and had no fear. He loved doing all the camping trips and other adventures with his family on Vancouver Island. He LOVED hockey, and mastered being a goalie and made the cut to the Junior AAA. He also enjoyed doing all the rebel teenage type things and from that, many memories that make family just shake their head and laugh.
Scott lived there with his family for ten years before entering the Canadian Armed forces at 18. He served approximately twelve years between Germany and Winnipeg as Corporal for the Princess Patricia Infantry and as their star goalie for the army hockey team. Upon leaving the forces, Scott moved to Alberta and started work in the oil patch. He started out working on the rigs as a rig hand, and then switched to doing industrial radiography which he quickly excelled in this industry which then became his passion. He worked for a few different X-ray companies over the next few years before coming to Grande Prairie to work in 2002.
In 2003 he met Dannette and their story began. During their almost 20 years together, they enjoyed the highest highs together and made it through the lowest lows.
In 2005, they had their son Leland. They then bought a “starter” trailer and acreage outside of Grovedale in 2006 and turned it into their little Burchard Gardens over time. They secretly got married on their front steps and a year later finally announced the real deal at their 1-year medieval themed wedding anniversary on Vancouver Island.
Scott was a workaholic who was extremely dedicated to his craft and one of the most professional and dedicated to his industry.
By 2009, Dannette was tired of Scott running himself ragged for other companies and decided to push Scott to believe in himself and together they started SGH Inspection Ltd. Scott took huge pride in their business and ALWAYS provided top notch service to his clients and most became his friend. In 2014, Scott and Dannette started a neighborhood haunt which eventually exploded into a well-known Halloween attraction for the surrounding community called Hornbrook Hollow. Both put their hearts and souls into their haunt as it was another passion they shared together. Scott’s characters named “Martha’s husband” or “the headless creepy guy crawling in the trail” ALWAYS got screams and pure laughter. Besides Christmas, it was his favorite time of year. In 2019, they decided to start Hornbrook Hollow’s Funhouse as an investment towards retirement. The next 3 years destroyed the game plan, but they still tried to find joy in how cool The Funhouse turned out to be.
Scott was diagnosed with COPD in 2004. Anyone who knew Scott well also knew he was a very stubborn man and lived off his coffee and cigarettes. He always downplayed everyone’s concerns because to him, sympathy from others meant weakness and he was going to live forever.
When work didn’t get in the way, Scott enjoyed going camping or going on trips to Vancouver Island. He loved to go fishing with family or with Ralph whenever he could get away. Scott was ALWAYS the life of any family gathering and would come up with silly games that made everyone laugh. He loved his Vancouver Canucks and the back and forth with his dad during any of the games either over the phone or via text.
He was a person who would give the shirt off his back for others and never expected anything in return. And most importantly, didn’t like to stress people out with things he felt like he could handle on his own.
Our hearts are broken Scotty, you will be hugely missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 12, 2023, at 1:00 pm at Bear Creek Funeral Home, Grande Prairie, AB.
