SCHEER, Wilbert Michael “Mike”
July 2, 1930 — December 28, 2022
Mike Scheer passed away peacefully on December 28, 2022 at the age of 92. Mike is survived by two brothers, Wayne and Dwight; one sister, Kathleen; three children, Greg (Susan) Scheer, Leslie (Doug) Whitney, and Stephanie (Brian) Scheer; three grandchildren, Stan (Elizabeth) Whitney, Amy (Curtis) Whitney, and Lindsay (Mitchell) Scheer; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Harmony Whitney; and his special friend and loving partner, Lea Rippel. Helen, his beautiful wife of 67 years, passed away in 2017.
Dad was born into a farming family in Fort Macleod, Alberta. Growing up in the Dirty 30s taught him the power of hard work, strength in family, and the essence of leadership. “Junior” always had a big smile and strong handshake; these were his tools for everyday life.
At the age of 18, Dad went to work for Calgary Power as an apprentice lineman. He married Helen on October 14, 1950. In 1955, they moved to Kelowna, BC, where their family life blossomed. Dad worked in the City of Kelowna electrical department for many years, and then for the IBEW as the Business Manager for 10 more years. For more than 35 years, he owned Mainline Power Contracting. He climbed poles until he was 75. He was held in high regard throughout the industry.
Dad believed in giving back to your community: Knights of Columbus (60 years), Boy Scouts (25 years), Rutland Housing Society, and Red Cross blood donor. He was always willing to lend a hand. When he and Mom travelled to other parts of the world, he always brought a suitcase filled with shoes and clothes for an orphanage.
Dad and Mom travelled with their kids, other families and their many friends throughout BC and the world. Mexico was Dad’s favourite travel destination. He loved the heat, the people and their spirit.
Dad loved dogs!! Fritzy, Sal, and Mitzu were all his best buddies!
Dad suffered the loss of Helen in 2017. He was twice blessed when he met Lea Rippel. She was his second great love. They enjoyed travelling, church activities and wine-o’clock together.
Dad’s love and spirit can be summed up – he was empathetic, kind, and always a gentleman. Dad did not tell us how to live; he lived and let us watch him. Dad believed in living by these four concepts: Faith, Family, Friends, Fun!
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Parkinson Canada.
A Funeral Mass will be held on FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 750 Rutland Road, Kelowna, BC. It will be followed by the C.W.L. Celebration luncheon downstairs.
