It is with great sadness that the family of S. J. Wayne Selig, 84, of Middle LaHave, announces his sudden passing on May 2, 2023.
Born in his grandmother’s house in Hemford, NS, he was the oldest son of the late Stanley and Merle (Hirtle) Selig. He spent many happy summers on his grandparents’ farm, helping the older people in the community, and developing a love of the woods and nature. He moved to Halifax to work when he was a teenager, and completed his apprenticeship. In 1957, he began working at the HMC Dockyard as a Machinist, and retired after 35 years.
Wayne met Goldie in Halifax, when they carpooled home to the South Shore on weekends. They were married in St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Gold River in 1964. After their daughter Heather was born, the family spent many wonderful summers in Green Bay, going to Rissers Beach and walking the shore. Wayne was a devoted father, whether it was driving Heather to piano lessons, or piggybacking her to the car after an exhausting day of tobogganing in Point Pleasant Park.
Wayne and Goldie loved antiques, and spent many years collecting them, eventually running a small antique business on the weekends. They took in stray cats throughout the years, and loved their feline friends. They moved from Halifax to Middle LaHave in 2000, and built their dream home. They loved living along the river, watching the birds and wildlife, growing rhubarb, and spending time in the forest.
Wayne was a perfectionist in all things, and enjoyed refinishing antique furniture, collecting old tools, and watching the birds. He was friendly and outgoing, and loved the music of Hank Williams and rock of the 1950s. He was an avid story teller, and knew much of the history of Bridgewater, Lunenburg, and surrounding areas. Following Goldie’s passing in 2020, he continued to live in their home until health issues made that no longer possible. He recently moved to Ridgewood Assisted Living in Bridgewater, and enjoyed his time there, among friends.
Wayne is survived by daughter, Heather (Kent Murray) Selig, Halifax; and brother Brian (Judy) Selig, Chester. He is predeceased by beloved wife Goldie, to whom he was married for 56 years.
A graveside service will be held at 11am on Monday May 8 in the Middle LaHave Cemetery, Middle LaHave. Rev. Alvin Wesgate officiating. A reception will follow at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy #3, Lunenburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the V.O.N., SHAID Tree Animal Shelter, or a charity of choice, would be appreciated by the family.
