It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Ruth Constance Lindsay on January 31, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 86.
Ruth was born to John and Beatrice Ramsay on July 2, 1936, in Stettler, Alberta. She grew up in Gadsby, before moving to Bowness. She attended Mount Royal High School where she was known for her singing and sense of humour. She married Dennis James Lindsay in 1958 and together they had three children; James, Robert, and Karen. As a family, they lived in many places around the province and embarked on many memorable adventures. She loved to travel, and her favourite destination was Rarotonga, Cook Islands.
Ruth had a wide-ranging work career and a lifelong participation in the arts. She is well known for her portrayal of her favourite character, Ouiser Boudreax, in many performances of the stage-play Steel Magnolias. She was also an active member of various choirs, including the Sweet Adelines. Ruth had a diverse set of talents and translated them into many occupations. She was a librarian, a columnist for the Edson Leader, a banker, a director of education, and even a municipal administrator. She also worked tirelessly for the Red Cross, traveling to disasters all around the world.
Ruth was a devoted Anglican and was deeply involved in the church. Here she met many lifelong friends and shared her community spirit. A talented pianist, she took pride in playing the organ during Sunday services at various parishes around the province.
Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dennis James Lindsay.
She is survived by her sons, James and Robert Lindsay; her daughter Karen (Andrew) McWhirter; her grandchildren Andrea (Scott) Stockdale and Christy Lindsay (Mathieu Boulanger); her great-grandchildren Hannah, Kaelan, and Calvin; her sister Mary (Ronald) Duncan; and her many beloved nephews and nieces.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
