Obituary
Ross Dale Hunter, long-time and current resident of High Level, Alberta passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital Intensive Care Unit Edmonton, at the age of 69 years, from pneumonia and complications of Myasthenia Gravis.
Ross was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 12, 1954. He grew up in Winnipeg, attending Lord Nelson Primary School, Andrew Mynarski Middle School, and Sisler High School in the North End. Ross was provided a solid theological grounding in the Lutheran Church by his family which formed the basis of his faith for the rest of his life.
After graduating, he completed his Business Administration Diploma at Red River Community College and was accepted into the Beaver Lumber Management Program. Ross chose Beaver because they had a funny ad on TV and he didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk all day. He loved running around the yard and helping customers. His first position with Beaver Lumber was 1974, in Brandon, Manitoba, where a customer walked up to him, his first day on the job, and growled, “You call yourself a lumber man?!” Ross stammered, “No, no – but I intend to be!”
Ross received management training from Lloyd and Teenie Kaiser at their Beaver Lumber in The Pas, Manitoba. He learned and grew from the fast friends he made in the Kinsmen Club. He achieved his first management position in Lynn Lake, Manitoba where he developed many life-long friendships. After transfer to Russell, MB, for his second management position, he was offered management of the High Level Beaver Lumber store, in the Little Red Ribbon building on 99th St in 1983. Seeing the potential in High Level, when Beaver Lumber moved to close their store in
1985, Ross franchised it and became part owner. In the late 1990s, Ross moved across the highway to a new store and in 2000, Beaver Lumber was taken over corporately by Home Hardware. Ross became the proud Lumberman Owner of Hunter Home Building Centre.
One day in 2003, Elizabeth Murray walked into his store and offered him computer training “half price”. Ross, being a guy to know an opportunity when he saw one, took her up on her offer, and wound up taking her for dinner. Eventually she realized what a truly beautiful soul Ross was and how blessed they were that God had brought them together. They were joyfully married in the Catholic Church in 2005 and shared 18 amazing years together. Their only child, Hertha Lydia Hunter, was stillborn in 2006 at the age of 14 weeks.
Ross retired from business in 2016 during a long struggle with Myasthenia Gravis which began in 2010. He was privileged to be able to volunteer around town for the Northwest Health Foundation and the Hospital Auxiliary to which he felt so grateful for his healthcare, and the Catholic Church from which he drew his comfort and strength.
Ross’s gratitude could never be truly expressed for the care and expertise that he received from Dr. Heinrich Brussow, MD, in High Level and Dr. Zaeem Azfer Siddiqi, MD, PhD., Professor of Neurology & Specialist in Neuromuscular Diseases; Aimee Soloway, RN; Derrick Blackmore & Ashley Mallon, Researchers, and all the support staff at the at the Neuromuscular & Myasthenia Gravis Clinic, Kaye Edmonton Clinic, University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton. Ross was privileged to make a presentation at one of the Myasthenia Gravis conferences to acknowledge in public how Dr. Siddiqi and his team had saved his life on multiple occasions.
Ross’s brother Al remembers Ross’s lifelong obsession with the Winnipeg Jets, the Blue Bombers, and anything Manitoba. Ross was a Jets fan when there was no Jets hockey team. He was convinced they were coming back. He was right. Ross was also an ardent fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Bud Grant. Viking colours were displayed everywhere at Ross and Elizabeth’s wedding. Bud Grant coached both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Minnesota Vikings. What a coincidence that both Bud Grant and Ross passed away so close together. A passing of two eras.
Ross loved curling, both on the ice and behind the glass. He had happy memories of many bonspiels and seasons, creating a solid sense of community in High Level. One of his greatest achievements was getting Elizabeth to reluctantly join him on a curling team for one season. Ross continued to be active as Elizabeth’s home manager extraordinaire, feeding the birds, caring for their pets, and finding ways to continue contributing to his beloved community of High Level. Ross showed his love for others in his kindness, gentleness, and generosity, and was very much loved in return.
