Obituary
Ronald Adam Berry of Millgrove, Ontario passed away peacefully after heroically succumbing to life altering complications on September 13, 2023 at The Hamilton General Hospital – ICU W, at the age of 75, surrounded by his loved ones. Maria would like to recognize and thank all the devoted doctors, nurses and medical staff of the ICU-W for their unwavering love, support and dedication to Ron’s care and the personal support she received from the team.
He was born in Fredericton, NB on September 6th, 1948, to Adam Barr Berry and Mildred Vera Tubman. He grew up at the Forestry Station, in Chalk River, ON and attended General Panet High School. After graduation Ron began his insurance career, which started with a broken-down car. Ron was one of the founding partners and president of Merit Insurance Brokers. This is where he met his wife of 25 years, Maria. They worked together to create a business filled with employees that are our Merit family.
Ron was passionate about living and life. This passion was carried out in everything he did which included all of his favorite hobbies, sports and involvement in the community. It’s no secret that Ron loved spending time on the water. Whether it was skiing, tubing or a quiet booze cruise, or enjoying a signature Black Russian cocktail with Tia Maria, NOT Kahlúa, around Safari Lake, Ron was present and embraced the joys of living. Ron took his commitment to baseball to a whole new level. His obsession extended beyond local teams close to home. From leading the Strabane Stingers to the Oakville Senior Slow Pitch League, to the Men’s 70’s to 75’s tournament teams. Ron was also a long-standing member of the Strabane Optimist Club.
When one would first meet Ron, they would immediately be drawn into his presence and feel like a best friend. It didn’t matter if you were 2 years old or 92 years old, you were accepted and worthy of his attention. He was the kindest, gentlest individual, one could instantly meet and call a friend. Under his roof (…and on his dock and in his garden) everyone was welcomed like family. Some of his greatest joys and pastimes with friends and family were spent: going for golf cart rides, fishing, water skiing, tubing, hosting the magnificent Summer Olympic Games, preparing large meals, relaxing at his home at Safari and Florida, hosting Moosenlanka, telling stories and playing practical jokes were just some of the ways he opened his heart and shared his contagious personality with the people he loved.
If anyone ever had the opportunity to visit Safari, they would see the passion that Ron put into his gardens creating a beautiful oasis which included numerous varieties of plants and flowers as well as a community vegetable garden for all to enjoy. It was here that Ron found peace and through his vision others were fortunate enough to enjoy it as well. It was evident that Ron was very proud of his garden by the hard work that he put into it.
Ron is predeceased in death by his parents, Adam and Mildred Berry, and stepmother Irene Berry, and son-in-law to the late Patrick and Yolanda Scally. Brother-in-law to Les Tinsley. He is survived by his wife, Maria. His former spouse Linda and their children Doug (Brooke) and Lesley (Paul). His grandchildren Donavan, Chelsea, Griffin, Brayden and Kelvin. His siblings Katherine, Suzanne and Russ. His nieces and nephews Nick, Madeleine, Curtis (Cassidy), Elizabeth (Patrick), David and Adam, and Sister-in-law Carolina.
Ron’s friendship was the type of friendship that redefines the meaning of what it means to be family. He was a second father to Jeremy and Britt, Casey and Brett, Heather and Gareth and special Uncle to Sailor, Remy, Aubrey, Leland, Ryan, and Addison.
Ron would often say, “It’s all part of the adventure!” …. and my goodness what an adventure it was.
Friends may visit with the family at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Private cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s memory can be made to the Hamilton General Hospital – ICU, Canadian Liver Foundation, Heart & Stroke Foundation or the ALS Society of Canada.
